Dehradun, also known as Dehra Doon is the capital and most populous city of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is the administrative headquarters of Dehradun district and the headquarters of the Garhwal division. Dehradun has served as the state's interim capital since the formation of Uttarakhand in 2000; Gairsain was designated the summer capital in 2020. The city lies in the Doon Valley in the foothills of the Himalayas, between the Shivalik Range to the south and the outer Himalayan ranges to the north. Dehradun has a generally temperate climate, with hot summers, cool winters and substantial monsoon rainfall.
