Porto is Portugal's proud second city, a steep, granite place tumbling down to the River Douro in a jumble of tiled facades, red roofs and church towers. Its heart is the Ribeira, the old riverside quarter of narrow lanes and colourful houses that meets the water beneath the great iron arch of the Dom Luis I Bridge.…

Livraria Lello

A famous neo-Gothic bookshop with a curved crimson staircase and a stained-glass ceiling, often linked with Harry Potter lore. Entry is ticketed and busy, but the price is redeemable against a book, so buy timed tickets online and go early.

Wandering Ribeira

The old riverside quarter of tall painted houses, arches and narrow lanes running down to the Douro. Free to explore on foot, lively day and night, and the classic spot for a first view of the bridge and the Gaia cellars across the water.

Clerigos Tower

A tall baroque bell tower over the old town with a climb of about 240 steps to a panorama over the rooftops and river. Ticketed entry; buy online to skip the queue and go early or at night for softer light.

Port cellars in Gaia

The historic port wine lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, such as Calem and Sandeman, offer guided cellar tours ending in a tasting. Book ahead and compare a couple, as tour length and the wines poured vary by price.

FrancesinhaDishJaherrero / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Francesinha

Porto's hearty signature sandwich: layers of steak, ham, fresh and cured sausage between bread, blanketed in melted cheese and drenched in a hot, spiced tomato and beer sauce, usually served over fries and often crowned with a fried egg. Rich, messy and unmistakably of this city, invented here in the mid twentieth century.

The sauce is the whole point, so pick a cafe known for its own recipe such as Cafe Santiago, and share one if you are unsure, as portions are large.

Tripas a moda do PortoDishJeremy Keith / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0

Tripas a moda do Porto

A slow-cooked stew of tripe, white beans, pork, sausage and vegetables that gave the city's people their nickname, tripeiros, or tripe-eaters, from a legend that Porto gave its meat to the fleet and kept only the offal. An old-fashioned, filling dish still cooked in traditional taverns.

It is a heavy, acquired taste best tried at a classic tasca rather than a tourist spot; ask if it is on the daily specials, as many places cook it only on certain days.

Port wineDrinkJon Sullivan / Wikimedia Commons, Public domain

Port wine

The sweet fortified wine that carries the city's name, made from Douro Valley grapes and aged across the river in the Gaia lodges. Styles run from young, fruity ruby to nutty aged tawny and rich vintage, and a tasting flight in a cellar is the classic way to learn the difference.

Try a tawny and a ruby side by side on a cellar tour to taste the contrast; a white port with tonic over ice is a refreshing aperitif on a warm evening.

Bacalhau (salt cod)DishAdriao / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0

Bacalhau (salt cod)

Salt cod is Portugal's national obsession, said to have a recipe for every day of the year, and Porto tascas serve many of them, from baked bacalhau a Gomes de Sa with potato, onion and egg to fried cod cakes. Comforting, everyday cooking rooted in the country's fishing history.

Look for the daily special, prato do dia, at a neighbourhood tasca for a home-style version, and try the classic pasteis de bacalhau, cod fritters, as a cheap snack.

Pastel de nataSweetAmanda Coutinho / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0

Pastel de nata

The famous Portuguese custard tart, with a caramelised top and a crisp, flaky pastry shell, is as beloved in Porto as anywhere in the country and sold warm at pastelarias across the city. A quick, cheap treat to pair with a bica.

Eat it warm with a dusting of cinnamon; a good one costs little more than a euro or two at an ordinary neighbourhood pastelaria.

Як дістатися та пересуватися

Справжні тарифи, не туристичні ціни.

Як дістатися
Metro from the airport 30 хв2–3 EUR · 3 USD

Metro Line E (Purple) runs directly from the airport into the centre in about half an hour and connects to the wider network at Trindade. The cheapest link; use a reusable Andante card and expect one change for many hotels.

Airport bus 40 хв2–5 EUR · 2–6 USD

STCP city buses and shuttle services link the airport with central districts for a low fare. Slower than the metro and less convenient with heavy luggage, but a cheap surface option.

Airport taxi 25 хв17–28 EUR · 20–32 USD

A metered taxi or ride-hailing trip covers the roughly eleven kilometres to the centre in around twenty-five minutes. Insist on the meter or a fixed app price, and watch for a small luggage supplement.

Як пересуватися
Metro1–3 EUR · 2–3 USD

A clean, modern light-rail network that links the main districts, the airport and Gaia across the bridge. Fast for longer hops, though the steep old core is best covered on foot.

Historic trams and buses1–3 EUR · 2–4 USD

A handful of vintage tram lines and the STCP bus network cover the hills and riverfront. A rechargeable Andante card is cheaper than paying cash, and the old trams are a scenic ride in their own right.

Walking the hills

The old quarters between the river and the upper town are best explored on foot, but the granite lanes are steep and can be slippery. Wear grippy, comfortable shoes and use the metro or funicular for the hardest climbs.

Найкраща пора для відвідування

квітень–червень і вересень–жовтень

Late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) bring warm, mostly dry days ideal for walking the hills and sitting by the river. Summer is busy and can be hot, while Porto's winters are mild but notably wet, so pack for rain outside the peak months.

Безпека

ОбережністьPickpocketing is the main risk, concentrated at Sao Bento station, the Ribeira, the Dom Luis bridge and crowded metro cars. Keep bags closed and in front, carry valuables in a front pocket, and stay alert in the crush when boarding.
ОбережністьPorto's granite steps and steep riverside lanes become slippery in the frequent rain and are hard on the feet and ankles. Wear supportive shoes with good grip, use the metro or funicular on the worst slopes, and take care after a shower.

Приховані скарбища

Walk the upper deck of the Dom Luis bridge at sunset for a free panorama over the Ribeira, the river and the Gaia cellars.
Slip a few streets inland from the quay for a francesinha at a classic cafe, far cheaper and better than the riverside tourist spots.
Ride the vintage tram along the river out to Foz, where the Douro meets the Atlantic, for sea air and a walk by the lighthouse.

Поширені запитання

How many days should I spend in Porto?

Two to three days cover the Ribeira, the bridge, a Gaia cellar tour and the main churches and viewpoints at a relaxed pace, with time to add Foz or a Douro Valley day trip if you have longer.

Is Porto walkable?

The centre is compact but steep and granite-cobbled, so walking is rewarding but tiring. The metro, a funicular and the bridge decks help with the biggest climbs and the crossing to Gaia.

Do I need to book the port cellars in advance?

In peak season it is wise to book a slot online for the busier lodges, though quieter ones often take walk-ins. Compare a couple, as tour length and the wines poured vary with the price.

Is the Livraria Lello worth the ticket?

It is beautiful but small and very crowded, and you need a timed ticket to enter. The price is redeemable against a book, so it is better value if you plan to buy one; go at opening or late to avoid the worst queues.

What is a francesinha?

It is Porto's signature sandwich: layers of meats and sausage under melted cheese, soaked in a spiced tomato and beer sauce, usually served with fries and often a fried egg on top. Hearty, rich and best shared if you are unsure.
