Sharjah is the third-largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates and the country's recognised cultural capital, sitting right beside Dubai but keeping a quieter, more traditional character. It was named a UNESCO Cultural Capital of the Arab World and an Islamic Culture Capital, and the city wears those titles proudly,…

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization

A beautifully presented museum under a golden dome on the Corniche, with thousands of artefacts spanning Islamic art, science, coins, manuscripts and astronomy. The zodiac ceiling in the central gallery is a highlight. A cool, calm indoor sight and the best single introduction to the city's cultural side.

Blue Souk (Central Souk)

A landmark market of two long blue-tiled buildings holding hundreds of shops for gold, carpets, pashminas, antiques and souvenirs. Bargaining is expected, so take your time and compare stalls. Even without buying, the architecture and the upper-floor carpet shops are worth a wander.

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Machboos (kabsa)DishBasel15 / Wikimedia Commons (public domain)

Machboos (kabsa)

The signature Emirati rice dish, also known as kabsa: long-grain rice cooked in a spiced broth with chicken, lamb or fish and deepened with loomi (dried lime), saffron and a warm bezar spice blend rather than fiery heat. It is the centrepiece of family lunches and celebrations across the UAE.

Look for it at a traditional Emirati restaurant at lunchtime, when it is freshly cooked; the dried-lime tang is the flavour to notice.

Harees

One of the oldest dishes in the Gulf, harees is cracked wheat slow-cooked with meat until it breaks down into a smooth, savoury, porridge-like blend, finished with ghee. Comforting and mild, it is especially associated with Ramadan, weddings and Eid tables.

It is a seasonal favourite during Ramadan; a good version is silky and light, not heavy, and is best eaten warm.

BalaleetDishDroodkin / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Balaleet

A beloved sweet-and-savoury Emirati breakfast of vermicelli noodles sweetened and scented with saffron, cardamom and rosewater, then topped with a thin savoury omelette. The contrast of sweet noodles and plain egg reflects old trade links with South Asia.

Order it in the morning at an Emirati cafe; try a forkful of the noodles and egg together to get the intended sweet-savoury balance.

Luqaimat

Small deep-fried dough dumplings, crisp and golden outside and soft within, soaked in date syrup (dibs) or honey and sometimes dusted with sesame. They are the classic Emirati sweet, sold at heritage festivals and served warm at Ramadan gatherings.

Eat them fresh and hot, right after frying, while the outside is still crunchy and the syrup has just soaked in.

Karak tea

Strong black tea brewed with evaporated milk, sugar and cardamom until rich and creamy, karak is the everyday drink of the UAE, sold cheaply at roadside cafeterias day and night. It is as much a social ritual as a beverage, ordered on the go with friends.

Grab one from a busy cafeteria window; many prepare it fresh to order and some serve it drive-up style without leaving your car.

Dates

Dates are the heart of Emirati hospitality, grown across the region and offered to guests alongside Arabic coffee as a welcome. Varieties such as khalas and the soft, dark ajwa range from caramel-sweet to rich and chewy, and they appear in sweets and everyday snacking alike.

Buy loose from a souk or specialist date shop where you can taste different varieties, and pair them with unsweetened Arabic coffee as locals do.

Taxi driver skips the meter

Як це працює: Some drivers offer a flat 'special' price instead of running the meter, especially for trips to Dubai or from tourist spots, which usually works out higher than the metered fare.

Як це уникнути: Ask for the meter before setting off; if the driver refuses, simply take another taxi. A ride-hailing app such as Careem fixes the price in advance and removes any argument.

Book everything — at the honest price

Trzly compares across the big providers and points you to the cheapest. We don't take your booking or hold your money — we send you straight to the source, name the price, and warn you about scams.

How Trzly ranks

Cheapest for you first — never by commission. When booking direct is cheaper, we say so, even when we earn nothing. Rank order is a function of price and trust only.

Insider tricks for the lowest price

Real tactics that actually save you money — we surface them, not just talk.

  • Always pay in the local currency — decline "pay in your currency" (DCC) to save 3–7%.
  • Open in a private window and clear cookies — some sites raise the price on repeat visits.
  • A transit/layover flight is usually cheaper than a direct one — worth the stop.
  • Book flights on Tuesday/Wednesday; avoid Friday and Sunday.
  • Book hotels direct on their own site — the member rate often beats the middlemen.
  • Ask for the "app-only rate" — often hidden from the public price.
  • Free cancellation? Book now and re-book if the price drops later.
  • Buy attraction tickets on the official site, not a reseller — no service fee.
  • A local eSIM instead of roaming — up to 90% cheaper.
  • Set a price alert and watch for the drop before high season.

Як дістатися та пересуватися

Справжні тарифи, не туристичні ціни.

Як дістатися
Airport bus to Rolla 40 хв2–3 USD

A public bus links Sharjah Airport with the central Rolla terminal for a low flat fare, the cheapest way into the city. It runs through the day at roughly half-hourly gaps but stops in the evening, so check the timetable for late arrivals.

Ride-hailing from the airport 20 хв12–18 USD

Careem and Uber operate at Sharjah Airport and are often cheaper and clearer than an airport taxi, with the fare fixed in the app. You will need local data or airport wifi to book and to meet the driver at the pickup point.

Airport taxi 20 хв16–22 USD

Official metered taxis wait at the rank outside arrivals, with an added airport surcharge. Convenient with luggage or on late arrivals; make sure the meter is on and use only the marked official rank rather than anyone touting inside.

Як пересуватися
City taxi3–8 USD

Sharjah's turquoise Sharjah Transport taxis are metered, plentiful and cheap for getting around town. Always use the meter, and be aware that crossing into Dubai in traffic can be slow and pricier than the short distance suggests.

Careem and Uber3–10 USD

Ride-hailing apps work well across Sharjah and between the emirates, fixing the fare in advance and tracking the route. They are the easiest way to avoid fare disputes and to travel comfortably between Sharjah and Dubai.

City buses2–3 USD

Sharjah's public buses connect the main districts and terminals for a low fare, paid in cash or with a Sayer card. Useful and cheap, though less frequent than Dubai's network, so they suit unhurried travel rather than tight schedules.

січень–березень і листопад–грудень

The cool season from November to March is by far the best time to visit, with warm, dry days ideal for the Corniche, souks and outdoor waterfronts, and comfortable evenings. April and October are hot but manageable, while the summer from June to September is extremely hot and humid, pushing almost all activity indoors into air-conditioned malls and museums.

Безпека

ОбережністьSummer heat and humidity in Sharjah are extreme, with daytime temperatures well above 40C and strong sun. Carry water, plan outdoor sights for early morning or after sunset, use sun protection, and rely on air-conditioned museums and malls in the hottest hours.
ОбережністьSharjah is more conservative than Dubai and enforces modest-dress guidance in public places, so cover shoulders and knees and avoid tight or revealing clothing, especially in souks and near mosques. It is a dry emirate where alcohol is banned entirely, public displays of affection are frowned upon, and during Ramadan you should not eat or drink in public in daytime.
ОбережністьCrime is very low and Sharjah is a safe city, so the real risks are on the roads. Traffic between Sharjah and Dubai is heavy at peak hours, drivers can be fast, and jaywalking is fined, so cross only at marked crossings and take care as a pedestrian.

Ride the Eye of the Emirates wheel at Al Qasba at dusk for a calm, high view over Khalid Lagoon and the city lights as the heat fades.
Slip into Souq Al Arsah in the Heart of Sharjah, one of the oldest markets in the country, for antiques, coffee and a restored courtyard away from the crowds.
Time an evening at Al Majaz Waterfront for the musical fountain show, then eat at a lagoon-side cafe with the illuminated Al Noor Mosque across the water.

Поширені запитання

How many days do I need in Sharjah?

One full day covers the Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Blue Souk, the Heart of Sharjah and an evening at Al Majaz or Al Qasba. A second day lets you add the aquarium, Al Noor Mosque and a slower wander through the heritage lanes.

Can I drink alcohol in Sharjah?

No. Sharjah is a dry emirate where alcohol is not sold or served anywhere, including hotels and restaurants, and bringing it in is illegal. If you want a drink with dinner, that belongs to neighbouring Dubai; in Sharjah the scene centres on cafes, juice bars and waterfronts.

Is Sharjah a good base for visiting Dubai?

Yes, it is cheaper than Dubai and only around a half-hour drive away outside peak times, so many visitors stay in Sharjah and day-trip across. Just plan around rush hour, when the road between the two emirates can be very slow.

Is Sharjah safe for tourists?

Very. The UAE has very low crime and Sharjah is calm and family-friendly. The main things to manage are the summer heat, honest taxi fares, and dressing and behaving modestly in line with the emirate's more conservative rules.

What currency is used and are cards accepted?

The UAE dirham (AED), pegged to the US dollar at about 3.67 to one. Cards are widely accepted in malls, hotels and larger restaurants, but carry some cash in dirhams for taxis, souks, small cafeterias and bus fares.
