London is the capital of the United Kingdom and one of the world's great cities, spread along the River Thames and made up of dozens of distinct neighbourhoods. Its history runs from Roman walls and a medieval fortress to royal palaces, grand Victorian streets and gleaming modern towers. Many of the finest attractions, including the British Museum and the national galleries, are free to enter, which makes the city surprisingly rewarding even on a careful budget. The famous sights cluster around Westminster, the South Bank and the City, all easily linked by the Underground, red buses and river boats.
