جائزہ

Amman is the capital of Jordan and the country's main gateway, a city built across a spread of steep hills where pale limestone buildings climb every slope. Its story runs deep: on the Citadel hill you stand among Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic ruins, while the great Roman Theatre carved into the hillside below…

Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a)نظارہ

Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a)

A hilltop archaeological site with the Temple of Hercules, an Umayyad palace and sweeping views over the city. The included Jordan Archaeological Museum is small but worth a look. Go late afternoon for cooler air and golden light over the hills.

Roman Theatreنظارہ

Roman Theatre

A steep, well-preserved 2nd-century theatre cut into the hillside, seating around 6,000 and still used for events. Climb to the top row for the view, and visit the two small folklore museums flanking the stage. It sits right in the downtown, easy to combine with Al-Balad.

Rainbow Streetتجربہ

Rainbow Street

A pedestrian-friendly street in Jabal Amman lined with cafes, restaurants, boutiques and viewpoints. Lively in the evenings and on weekends, and home to the summer Souk Jara market. A good place to slow down over coffee and watch the city.

King Abdullah I Mosqueنظارہ

King Abdullah I Mosque

A striking 1980s mosque topped with a blue mosaic dome, one of the few in Amman that welcomes non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times. Modest dress is required and robes are lent at the door. A short visit gives a sense of the city's religious architecture.

Mansaf

Jordan's national dish and the centrepiece of any celebration: tender lamb slow-cooked in a tangy sauce of jameed (dried fermented yoghurt), served over rice and thin shrak bread and topped with almonds and pine nuts. It is traditionally shared from a big communal platter and eaten with the right hand.

Mansaf is a feast, often reserved for Fridays and special occasions; some restaurants prepare it on request or on set days, so ask ahead.

MaqlubaDishArafataslan / Wikimedia Commons (public domain)

Maqluba

Meaning 'upside-down', this one-pot dish layers rice, meat (usually chicken or lamb) and fried vegetables such as cauliflower, aubergine and potato, then is flipped onto a platter at the table so the layers form a golden dome. It is a beloved home-style dish found on many Amman menus.

The dramatic flip is part of the fun; order it at a traditional restaurant where they serve it freshly turned out rather than pre-plated.

FalafelDishMiansari66 / Wikimedia Commons (CC0)

Falafel

Deep-fried patties of ground chickpeas, herbs and spices, crisp outside and fluffy inside, served hot in bread with tahini, tomato, pickles and parsley or eaten by the piece. In Amman it is a downtown breakfast and street-food staple sold on almost every corner.

Eat it straight from the fryer while still crunchy; the famous downtown houses are cheapest and busiest first thing in the morning.

HummusDishSatdeep Gill / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Hummus

A smooth dip of blended chickpeas, tahini, lemon and garlic, finished with olive oil and eaten warm with fresh bread at almost every Jordanian table. Downtown Amman's no-frills hummus and falafel houses have achieved near-legendary status among locals and visitors alike.

Order it alongside foul (stewed fava beans) and falafel for the classic cheap Ammani breakfast, and scoop rather than use a spoon.

KnafehSweetTheipu / Wikimedia Commons (CC0)

Knafeh

A hot dessert of soft white cheese under a layer of shredded or semolina pastry, baked until golden, soaked in fragrant sugar syrup and often dusted with crushed pistachio. The sweet-salty, crisp-gooey contrast makes it the star of Amman's sweet shops.

Have it fresh and hot, cut from the tray in front of you; Habibah near the downtown steps is the classic place to try it standing at the counter.

Arabic coffee (qahwa)DrinkWikimedia Commons

Arabic coffee (qahwa)

Light, cardamom-scented coffee served in small handleless cups, a symbol of Jordanian hospitality poured for guests and at gatherings. Sweet black tea with mint or sage is its everyday companion, sipped for hours in cafes and homes alike.

If someone offers you Arabic coffee, accepting a cup is a warm gesture; gently swirl the cup when you have had enough to signal you are finished.

Inflated airport taxi fare

یہ کیسے کام کرتا ہے: Drivers at Queen Alia sometimes quote well above the official zone fare, or approach you inside the terminal offering a 'special' price that turns out to be much higher.

اس سے کیسے بچیں: Use only the official taxi rank outside arrivals, agree the set zone fare first, or take the far cheaper Airport Express bus. Never accept a ride from someone touting inside the building.

Book everything — at the honest price

Trzly compares across the big providers and points you to the cheapest. We don't take your booking or hold your money — we send you straight to the source, name the price, and warn you about scams.

How Trzly ranks

Cheapest for you first — never by commission. When booking direct is cheaper, we say so, even when we earn nothing. Rank order is a function of price and trust only.

Insider tricks for the lowest price

Real tactics that actually save you money — we surface them, not just talk.

  • Always pay in the local currency — decline "pay in your currency" (DCC) to save 3–7%.
  • Open in a private window and clear cookies — some sites raise the price on repeat visits.
  • A transit/layover flight is usually cheaper than a direct one — worth the stop.
  • Book flights on Tuesday/Wednesday; avoid Friday and Sunday.
  • Book hotels direct on their own site — the member rate often beats the middlemen.
  • Ask for the "app-only rate" — often hidden from the public price.
  • Free cancellation? Book now and re-book if the price drops later.
  • Buy attraction tickets on the official site, not a reseller — no service fee.
  • A local eSIM instead of roaming — up to 90% cheaper.
  • Set a price alert and watch for the drop before high season.

وہاں پہنچنا
Airport Express bus ١ گھنٹہ٤–٦ $

The Sariyah Airport Express links Queen Alia with the 7th Circle and the northern bus station in around an hour. By far the cheapest option, comfortable and air-conditioned, though it runs only every hour or two.

Ride-hailing from the airport ٤٥ منٹ١٥–٢٨ $

Uber and Careem operate at Queen Alia and are often cheaper and clearer than an airport taxi, with the price fixed in the app. You will need local data or airport wifi to book and meet the driver at the pickup point.

Airport taxi ٤٠ منٹ٢٥–٣٨ $

Official yellow taxis charge a set zone fare, not a meter, from the airport to the city. Convenient with luggage or on late arrivals, but confirm the fixed price before setting off and use only the official rank.

آس پاس گھومنا
City taxi٢–٤ $

Yellow metered taxis are plentiful and cheap for getting around Amman's hills. Always ask for the meter; if the driver refuses, take another. Carry small change, as drivers rarely have much.

Uber and Careem٢–٨ $

Ride-hailing apps work well across the city, fix the fare in advance and track the route, which makes them the easiest way to avoid fare disputes. Coverage and prices are good throughout central Amman.

Walking downtown

The downtown and its sights are walkable, but Amman is famously hilly and many streets are steep with long staircases. Comfortable shoes help, and a taxi between distant hills saves your legs in the heat.

جانے کا بہترین وقت

مارچ–مئی اور ستمبر–نومبر

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most pleasant, with warm days, cool evenings and green or golden hills. Summer is hot and dry but bearable thanks to Amman's altitude and cool nights, while winter is chilly and wet, with occasional snow that can briefly close the steep streets.

حفاظت

احتیاطAmman is built on steep hills with long staircases and busy roads where drivers can be assertive and crossings are informal. Wear sturdy shoes, take care on uneven pavements and stairs, and cross with locals rather than alone.
احتیاطJordan is welcoming but fairly conservative, especially downtown and at religious sites. Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful, women may prefer a scarf for mosques, and public displays of affection are best kept low-key.
احتیاطSummer sun is strong at Amman's altitude, so carry water and sun protection for open sites like the Citadel and Jerash. Winter can be genuinely cold and wet, and rare snow or ice makes the hilly streets slippery, so pack warm layers in the cold months.

Ride up to the Wild Jordan Center cafe for one of the best terrace views over the Citadel and downtown, with local produce and nature-reserve products for sale.
Visit the summer Souk Jara street market on Rainbow Street (Fridays in the warmer months) for local crafts, food stalls and a relaxed community atmosphere.
Track down a fresh ka'ak sesame bread ring from a downtown cart, eaten warm with the little packet of za'atar the seller hands you, the way Ammanis snack on the move.

اکثر پوچھے گئے سوالات

How many days do I need in Amman?

Two full days cover the Citadel, Roman Theatre, downtown, a museum and Rainbow Street at a relaxed pace. Add extra days if you want to use Amman as a base for day trips to Jerash, the Dead Sea or Petra.

What day trips can I do from Amman?

Jerash and its Roman ruins are about an hour north, and the Dead Sea is roughly an hour west for floating and resorts. Petra and Wadi Rum are further south, around three to four hours away, and are better as an overnight rather than a single long day.

Is Amman safe for tourists?

Yes, Amman is generally very safe and Jordanians are famously hospitable. Serious crime against visitors is rare; the main annoyances are taxi drivers avoiding the meter and occasional overcharging, which are easily managed with apps and a little care.

Do I need to dress conservatively?

Amman is more relaxed than rural Jordan, but modest dress covering shoulders and knees is respectful, particularly downtown and at mosques. Women are not required to cover their hair except inside mosques, where robes and scarves are usually provided.

What currency is used and are cards accepted?

Jordan uses the Jordanian dinar (JOD), a strong currency pegged to the US dollar. Cards work in hotels, malls and mid-range restaurants, but carry cash in dinars for taxis, downtown stalls, small cafes and entry fees.
