In Cusco

Buy the entry ticket in advance from official channels, as daily numbers are capped and circuits are fixed. Different circuits and add-on climbs have different prices, so choose before you buy.

Train to Machu Picchu
The train from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes is the main way in. Book early, compare service classes, and note that a return fare is what most visitors need.

Tourist ticket for the sites
A combined ticket covers several Sacred Valley and Cusco sites over a few days. If you plan to see more than one or two ruins it usually saves money versus separate entries.

Short taxi within Cusco
City taxis are cheap but rarely use meters. Agree the fare before getting in, use a well-marked or app-booked taxi where you can, and keep small change ready.

Mid-range restaurant meal
Eat a street or two off the main plaza for better prices. Look for a set lunch menu, which is excellent value for a starter, main and drink.

Coca or herbal tea
Herbal and coca teas are cheap and widely offered to help with the altitude. Many hotels provide them free; avoid paying tourist prices for a simple cup.

Hire official guides at the site entrance or through a reputable agency. The price is usually per group for a set tour, so sharing among several people is good value.
