Tổng quan

Giza sits on the western edge of greater Cairo and is famous the world over for the pyramids and the Great Sphinx that rise from the desert plateau above the city. The three main pyramids, built as royal tombs more than four and a half thousand years ago, are among humanity's most astonishing achievements and the only…

Điểm tham quan

The Great Pyramid of Khufu

The largest of the three pyramids and the last standing ancient Wonder. The general plateau ticket lets you walk around it; entering the interior needs a separate ticket. Go early for cooler air and fewer crowds.

Hoạt động

Entering a pyramid interior

A cramped, steep passage leads to an inner chamber. It is hot, airless and not for the claustrophobic, and the chambers are bare, but it is a memorable extra for the curious. A separate ticket applies.

Điểm tham quan

The Great Sphinx

The colossal limestone lion with a human head, guarding the plateau. Viewing is included in the plateau ticket. The area in front offers the classic photo with the pyramids behind.

A rise to the south-west of the plateau where all three pyramids line up for the postcard shot. It is a walk or short ride from the main entrance; agree any transport price first.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Ful MedamesDishMiansari66 / Wikimedia Commons (CC0)

Ful Medames

Egypt's everyday breakfast staple: slow-simmered fava beans mashed with olive oil, garlic, lemon and cumin, often topped with a fried or boiled egg and scooped up with warm baladi bread. It is simple, cheap and eaten by nearly everyone, from roadside carts to family kitchens.

Feteer MeshaltetDishMohamed Ouda / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Feteer Meshaltet

A flaky, buttery layered pastry pulled and folded into dozens of thin sheets before baking, sometimes called Egyptian pizza. It can be served plain and torn apart with honey and cream for a sweet version, or stuffed with cheese, minced meat or eggs for a savoury one.

Sugarcane Juice (Asab)DrinkYahya / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Sugarcane Juice (Asab)

Fresh sugarcane stalks are pressed on the spot through a hand-cranked or motorised roller at street stands, producing a bright green, intensely sweet, ice-cold juice. It is a genuinely different drinking experience from the bottled juices most visitors know, and one of Egypt's most refreshing hot-weather staples.

BasbousaSweetstu_spivack / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.0)

Basbousa

A dense semolina cake soaked in sugar syrup, often flavoured with coconut or rose water and topped with an almond, cut into diamond-shaped pieces. It is syrupy-sweet, common at celebrations and religious occasions, and sold in nearly every Egyptian pastry shop.

Hamam Mahshi (Stuffed Pigeon)Dishmedea_material / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0)

Hamam Mahshi (Stuffed Pigeon)

Whole pigeon stuffed with spiced rice, freekeh or liver, then grilled or slow-cooked until tender, a tradition with roots stretching back to Pharaonic-era pigeon breeding. Egyptians are the only people in the region who eat pigeon this widely, making it a genuinely novel dish for most first-time visitors.

Fake ticket sellers

Cách thức hoạt động: People outside the plateau offer to sell you entry tickets, skip-the-queue passes or 'combined' tickets that are overpriced, invalid or simply pocketed.

Cách tránh: Buy tickets only at the official ticket office or recognised online channel. Ignore anyone selling tickets in the car park or on the approach road, however official they appear.

Walking the plateau

The monuments are spread over a large, sandy, uneven site with little shade. Comfortable shoes, a hat and water are essential; distances between pyramids are longer than they look.

Optional rides cross the sand to viewpoints. Use official operators, agree the full price and route first, and check the animals look well cared for before committing.

Short local taxi2-5 US$

Handy for hopping between the entrance, the panorama viewpoint and nearby restaurants. Agree the fare before getting in or use a ride-hailing app for an upfront price.

Thời điểm tốt nhất để ghé thăm

Tháng 2–Tháng 3 và Tháng 10–Tháng 12

The cooler months from October to April are ideal, with December to March the most comfortable for walking the exposed plateau. Summers from June to August are intensely hot with little shade; if you must visit then, go at opening time and leave before midday.

An toàn

Cảnh báoThe plateau is open desert with almost no shade, and the sun is fierce for much of the year. Carry more water than you expect to need, wear a hat and sunscreen, and start at opening to avoid the worst heat.
Thận trọngCamel, horse and souvenir touts work the site persistently and some are pushy. Keep a firm, polite manner, decide in advance what you want, and do not feel obliged to engage or pay for unrequested services.
Thận trọngSome camels and horses at the site are not well cared for. If you choose to ride, pick an animal that looks healthy and an operator who treats it well, or skip the ride entirely and walk.

Viên ngọc ẩn

Arrive right at opening time to photograph the pyramids in soft morning light before the tour buses fill the plateau.
Walk out to the desert panorama point for the classic shot with all three pyramids lined up.
Combine the plateau with the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum for antiquities and pyramids in a single well-planned day.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

How much time do I need at the pyramids?

A half day covers the plateau, the Sphinx and a panorama photo at a relaxed pace. Add time if you want to enter a pyramid interior or combine the visit with the Grand Egyptian Museum nearby.

Should I do a camel or horse ride?

It is optional and can be fun for the views, but agree the full price, route and time clearly before mounting and never hand over your ticket or phone. Check the animal looks well cared for, or simply walk instead.

Can I go inside a pyramid?

Yes, with a separate limited ticket bought at the official window. The passage is steep, cramped and hot and the chambers are bare, so it suits the curious rather than those who dislike tight spaces.

How do I avoid the touts and scams?

Buy tickets only at the official office, ignore anyone claiming the site is closed or offering 'free' gifts, and agree any ride price and route in advance. A licensed guide or a firm, polite no goes a long way.

Is Giza far from central Cairo?

No. It is on the western side of greater Cairo, typically well under an hour by ride-hailing car depending on traffic. Many visitors combine it with the city and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
