The 'Top of Interlaken' at 1,322 m, reached by a steep funicular from near Interlaken Ost. A glass-floored viewing platform juts out over the town, with both lakes and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau spread out below. Go for sunset and eat at the castle-like Panorama Restaurant, but book the last descent time.
A long cog-railway journey to Europe's highest station at 3,454 m, among glaciers, an ice palace and viewpoints over the Aletsch Glacier. It is spectacular but pricey and crowded; go early on a clear day, allow a full day, and dress warmly as it is freezing even in summer.
Scenic boats criss-cross the two lakes from piers near each station, calling at castles, lakeside villages and the St Beatus Caves. Lake Brienz is the more vivid turquoise; a one-way leg with a train back makes an easy, relaxed half day on the water.
Interlaken is one of the world's top paragliding spots, and a tandem flight with a certified pilot lets you soar over the town and lakes with no experience needed. Choose an established, well-reviewed operator, check the weather, and know that flights are often rescheduled for wind.

In the Bernese Oberland the cheese comes from nearby Alpine dairies, giving a grassier, nuttier depth than tourist versions elsewhere.

Swiss trains link Zurich Airport with Interlaken Ost in around two hours, usually with one easy change at Bern or Zurich HB. Clean, punctual and scenic; the simplest and most enjoyable way to arrive, with luggage racks on board.
Interlaken sits on scenic lines from Lucerne, Bern and Montreux, including parts of the GoldenPass route. Slower than the direct airport run but beautiful, and a good option if you are coming from within Switzerland.
A private car or taxi from the airport is fast and door-to-door but very expensive over this distance, worth it only for groups with lots of luggage or awkward timings. For almost everyone the train is far better value.
Many Interlaken hotels give a guest card that makes local buses free within the area, handy for reaching St Beatus Caves, campsites and outlying hotels. Ask for the card at check-in and keep it with you when you ride.
Cog railways, funiculars and cable cars climb from the valley to Harder Kulm, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and beyond. Fares are high and fixed; rail passes give discounts, and timetables are precise, so plan connections carefully.
Central Interlaken is small and flat, and the two stations, the Höhematte and the lakes are all within an easy stroll. Walking is the best way to get around town itself; save the trains and buses for the mountains and lakes.
Late spring to early autumn (May to September) is the prime season, with green valleys, open mountain railways, lake boats running and long days for hiking; July and August are busiest and dearest. June and September are a sweet spot for fewer crowds. Winter is cold and quieter in town but a gateway to nearby ski areas, while shoulder months can be wet with cloud hiding the peaks.
Two to three days lets you do Harder Kulm, a lake cruise and one big mountain trip such as Jungfraujoch or the Lauterbrunnen valley at a reasonable pace. Add more days if you want to hike, try adventure sports or use it as a base for the wider Jungfrau region.
On a clear day the glaciers and views from the Top of Europe are unforgettable, but it is one of the most expensive excursions in Switzerland and disappointing in cloud. Check the mountain webcams and weather first, and if it is overcast consider the cheaper Lauterbrunnen valley or Harder Kulm instead.
The train from Zurich Airport to Interlaken Ost, about two hours with one easy change, is the best value and most scenic option. A Half Fare Card or a Swiss Travel Pass can reduce the cost if you are making several journeys; a private taxi is far more expensive.
Yes, Interlaken is very safe with little serious crime. The main risks are practical: keep an eye on luggage at the busy stations, choose certified operators for adventure sports, respect fast-changing mountain weather, and remember the glacial lakes are dangerously cold for swimming.
