Touts and some booking desks push pricey private cars or 'exclusive' tours to Capilano, Grouse or Whistler, when the attractions run their own cheap or free shuttles and the public transit or a group shuttle gets you there for a fraction of the cost.
Book attractions directly on their own websites, use the free Capilano shuttle or a C$30 Whistler shuttle, and compare a self-guided transit trip before paying for a private tour you may not need.
Restaurants clustered around Canada Place, the cruise terminal and the most tourist-facing blocks of Gastown charge premium prices for average food, banking on foot traffic and the view.
Walk a few blocks inland or into Chinatown, Commercial Drive or Main Street where locals eat, and check the menu and prices before sitting down. The same money buys much better food a short walk away.
Fares for the same trip can differ a lot: rideshare surges sharply on weekend nights, during rain and at events, sometimes costing far more than a metered taxi, while at quiet times the taxi is the pricier option.
Check the rideshare estimate before confirming, and if it's surging, grab a taxi or the frequent SkyTrain instead, which charges a flat Compass fare no matter the demand.
A few blocks east of Gastown around East Hastings Street, the Downtown Eastside has very visible homelessness, drug use and street disorder that can feel confronting, and aggressive panhandling occurs. It is a social-crisis area, not a tourist-trap scam, and violent crime against passing visitors is rare.
There's no need to fear it, but there's little reason to linger — walk through with normal awareness by day, don't photograph people, decline aggressive requests calmly, and route around it at night rather than wandering in.
As in many big cities, people with clipboards occasionally approach tourists downtown asking you to sign a petition or donate to a 'charity', using the interaction to pressure you for cash or distract from your bag.
You're free to keep walking — legitimate charities don't demand on-the-spot cash. Give a polite no, keep your bag closed and in front of you, and donate to registered charities directly if you want to help.
