A long, wild beach about 40 km west of Salalah, backed by tall limestone cliffs with natural blowholes that shoot jets of seawater high into the air when the swell is strong. There is a boardwalk over the blowholes and dramatic views along the coast. The sea is rough during the Khareef, so admire it rather than swim.
A green valley east of Salalah with waterfalls, pools and boating, at its most spectacular during and just after the Khareef when the hills turn emerald and cascades tumble over the cliffs. Come early to avoid the biggest crowds, and expect mist and drizzle in monsoon season.
A UNESCO-listed medieval port city on the seafront, once a hub of the frankincense and horse trade, with ruins set in a lagoon-side park and the excellent Museum of the Land of Frankincense. Allow time for both the walk and the museum; a small electric shuttle helps in the heat.
Salalah's traditional market near the Sultan's palace, the classic place to buy frankincense, incense burners, bakhoor and perfume oils. Prices are negotiable and vendors will happily explain the different grades of resin. A short, atmospheric stop, best in the late afternoon.

A celebration dish of lamb, goat or camel meat marinated in a paste of spices, wrapped in palm or banana leaves and slow-cooked for a day or more in an underground sand pit. The result is meltingly tender, smoky meat, traditionally shared at Eid and big family gatherings.
Shuwa is usually a special-occasion dish rather than everyday restaurant fare, so ask ahead or look for it around festivals and at traditional Omani restaurants.

It is popular in Ramadan and on cooler evenings, and is a staple of Omani home cooking across the Dhofar region.
Have it hot as a filling starter or light meal; a squeeze of lime and a sprinkle of spice lift the mild, savoury flavour.
Salalah sits on rich Indian Ocean waters, and its kingfish, hammour, lobster and prawns are prized across Oman for their firm, sweet flesh. Grilled simply over coals or cooked in a spiced Dhofari sauce, the day's catch is one of the great pleasures of eating here.
Look for restaurants grilling the fresh catch rather than serving frozen fish, and eat where local families gather for the best and freshest plates.

Buy straight from a plantation stall, drink the water first, then ask the seller to split the nut so you can scoop out the soft flesh.

Sold in bunches at farm stalls along with papaya and coconut, they are a local point of pride and a cheap, healthy snack.
The smaller and slightly speckled the banana, the sweeter it usually is; buy a whole bunch fresh from a roadside farm stand.

It is the classic gesture of Omani hospitality, offered to guests across the country including Dhofar.
A little goes a long way as it is very rich; the best halwa is soft and aromatic, and it pairs perfectly with bitter Omani coffee.

Accepting a cup is a warm gesture; gently shake the empty cup from side to side when you have had enough to signal you are finished.

It is still tapped in the hills, sold in the souqs and burned as bakhoor to perfume homes and clothes.
The pale, translucent Hojari grade is the most prized; buy a small amount with a simple burner and charcoal at Al Haffa souq to take the scent of Salalah home.

Apps such as OTAXI and Tasleem operate at Salalah Airport and are usually cheaper and clearer than a negotiated taxi, with the fare fixed in the app. You will need local data or airport wifi to book and meet the driver.
Taxis wait outside the terminal but have no meter, so agree the fare first. Convenient with luggage on late arrivals, but confirm the price before setting off, as quotes to tourists are often inflated for the short ride into town.
Renting a car at the airport is the most practical choice for exploring Salalah, whose sights are spread along the coast and up into the mountains. Roads are good and driving is straightforward; book ahead in the Khareef.
Ride-hailing apps work across the city, fix the fare in advance and remove haggling, which makes them the easiest way to avoid overcharging. Coverage is good in and around central Salalah.
Orange-and-white taxis can be flagged down but have no meter, so negotiate the fare before you get in. Fine for short trips if you agree a fair price, though an app is usually cheaper and clearer.
With a rental car you can reach Wadi Darbat, Mughsail, Jabal Samhan and the eastern coastal towns at your own pace. This is by far the best way to see the Dhofar region, especially during the green Khareef season.
Salalah has two very different seasons. The Khareef monsoon (roughly July to September) is the famous one, when the mountains turn green, waterfalls flow and temperatures stay mild while the rest of the Gulf bakes, though it brings mist, drizzle and big crowds. October is a sweet spot, with the hills still lush but skies clearing and fewer visitors. From November to February the weather is dry, sunny and warm, ideal for beaches and the sea, with the landscape gradually turning golden again.
The Khareef monsoon runs roughly from July to mid-September, when the mountains turn green and waterfalls flow. October is also lush and less crowded, while November to February is dry, sunny beach weather.
Three to four days is ideal: a day for the western coast at Mughsail and Fazayah, a day for the historical sites of Al Baleed and Khor Rori, a day for the mountains and Wadi Darbat, and time for the city, souq and beaches.
It is highly recommended. The sights are spread along the coast and up into the mountains and public transport is limited, so a rental car gives you the freedom to explore. App-based taxis cover the city itself well.
Yes, Salalah is very safe and Omanis are known for their hospitality. Serious crime against visitors is rare; the main things to manage are taxi overcharging, modest dress and the wet, crowded conditions of the Khareef season.
Oman uses the Omani rial (OMR), a high-value currency pegged to the US dollar and divided into 1,000 baisa. Cards work in hotels, malls and mid-range restaurants, but carry cash for taxis, souq stalls, roadside produce and site entry fees.
