The city's landmark fortress on a volcanic crag, home to the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and the One O'Clock Gun fired daily except Sunday. Book a timed ticket online in advance to save money and skip queues, and allow a couple of hours to see it properly.
The spine of the Old Town, running downhill from the Castle to Holyrood through a string of historic closes, courtyards, churches and shops. Free to walk and full of atmosphere, though many of its tartan shops and laminated-menu restaurants are overpriced tourist traps; duck down a side close for better value.
An extinct volcano in Holyrood Park rising right beside the city, with a rewarding 45-minute climb to a 360-degree view over Edinburgh and the sea. Free and open all hours; wear proper shoes as the paths are rocky, steep and often wet and windy at the top.

The Edinburgh Tram links the airport with the city centre in around 30 to 35 minutes, running frequently through the day. Comfortable and reliable, with a single flat airport fare that is dearer than a normal city tram ticket.
The Airlink 100 express bus runs 24 hours between the airport and Waverley Bridge and is the cheapest direct link to the centre. Frequent, with luggage space, and only a little slower than the tram.
Licensed taxis from the airport rank reach the centre in about 25 minutes and are metered. Convenient with luggage or late at night, but the most expensive option; a booked app car is often a little cheaper.
A dense, frequent bus network covers the whole city with one flat single fare, paid by contactless or exact change. The main way locals get around; contactless taps are capped at the day-ticket price.
A single tram line runs through the centre from the west of the city to Leith and the coast, useful for a few key routes. The same contactless cap applies within the city zone, though the airport section costs more.
Central Edinburgh is compact and best seen on foot, but it is genuinely hilly, with steep closes, staircases and cobbles. Comfortable, grippy shoes and a waterproof layer make all the difference.
Late spring and early autumn (May to June and September) bring the mildest, brightest weather and lighter crowds. August is the city's peak, when the Fringe and International Festival fill it with shows but also with visitors and higher prices, so book far ahead. Winter is cold, dark and often wet, but atmospheric, with Christmas markets and Hogmanay; expect rain and wind in any season.
Two to three days covers the Castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood, a museum, Arthur's Seat and Calton Hill at a relaxed pace, with time for the pubs and viewpoints. Add more if you want day trips to the Highlands, Stirling or the coast.
August is thrilling, with the Fringe and International Festival turning the whole city into a stage, but it is also the busiest and most expensive time, and accommodation books out months ahead. For calmer sightseeing and lower prices, come in late spring or September.
