Watch out in Shanghai

The 'tea ceremony' invitation scamNever follow a stranger who invites you to a teahouse, bar or 'exhibition', however charming. If someone approaches out of the blue wanting to practise English and then suggests going somewhere, politely decline and walk on. For real tea, go to a teahouse with posted prices, like the historic Huxinting at Yu Garden.
Airport black taxi and no-meter overchargingIgnore anyone offering a taxi inside the terminal. Join the official taxi rank outside and insist the meter is used, or book a DiDi from the designated pickup zone for a fixed app price. The maglev and Metro Line 2 are far cheaper still.
The 'art student' gallery scamTreat any unsolicited invitation to a gallery or exhibition as a sales trap and decline. Buy art only from established shops with clear prices, and never let yourself be walked to an unknown upstairs room by a stranger.

نمای کلی

Shanghai is China's biggest and most cosmopolitan city, split by the Huangpu River into two very different halves. On the east bank rises Pudong, a wall of super-tall towers led by the twisting Shanghai Tower, best admired at night from the Bund — the grand curve of 1920s European buildings along the west bank in old…

The Bund waterfront

Shanghai's signature free walk: a wide riverside promenade along the Huangpu lined with grand 1920s banks and hotels on one side and the futuristic Pudong skyline on the other. It costs nothing and is at its best after dark when the towers light up; come early evening to beat the thickest crowds and the touts.

Yu Garden (Yuyuan)

A beautiful 16th-century classical Chinese garden of rockeries, ponds, pavilions and dragon-topped walls in the Old City, with the historic Huxinting Teahouse on its zigzag bridge. Entry is about ¥40 (a little less in low season); the surrounding Yuyuan Bazaar is free to wander but tourist-priced, so shop and snack with care.

Shanghai Tower observation deck

China's tallest building and one of the world's highest observation decks, on the 118th floor at 546m, reached by an ear-popping high-speed lift. A standard adult ticket is around ¥180; go on a clear day or evening for the view, and buy from the official counter or app to avoid marked-up resellers.

Nanjing Road

China's most famous shopping street, a long pedestrianised run of department stores, neon and crowds linking People's Square to the Bund. Free to stroll and great for people-watching and street snacks, but it is also prime hunting ground for the tea-house and art-student touts, so keep walking if a friendly stranger tries to lead you somewhere.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Dish

Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings)

Shanghai's most famous dish: delicate steamed dumplings filled with seasoned meat and a mouthful of hot broth, served in bamboo baskets. The standard filling is pork, so they are not halal unless made at a halal kitchen. Rare beef versions exist at some Hui Muslim restaurants.

Eat them carefully — nip the top, sip the soup, then eat the dumpling — and note that the classic ones are pork; Muslim travellers should ask for a halal (清真) restaurant or a beef version.

Dish

Shengjianbao (pan-fried buns)

A beloved Shanghai breakfast and snack: thick-bottomed buns pan-fried until crisp and golden underneath, filled with juicy meat and soup and topped with sesame and spring onion. Like xiaolongbao they are traditionally made with pork, so they are not halal by default.

Buy them fresh from a busy street stall while still sizzling; be careful of the hot soup inside, and remember the standard filling is pork.

Dish

Hairy crab

A prized autumn delicacy across the Shanghai region: freshwater crabs steamed simply to show off their rich roe and sweet meat, eaten from September to November when they are at their plumpest. A seasonal ritual rather than an everyday dish, and often not cheap.

Try it in autumn, traditionally with warm rice wine and ginger tea; if you avoid alcohol, ginger tea alone is the classic pairing. It is a fiddly, hands-on meal, so take your time.

Dish

Scallion-oil noodles

A simple, iconic Shanghai comfort dish: noodles tossed in a fragrant sauce of scallions slowly fried in oil with soy sauce and a little sugar. Cheap, satisfying and found everywhere, it is one of the most accessible local flavours.

Order it at a no-frills local noodle shop for a few yuan; the basic version is usually meat-free, but check whether any topping or the sauce base contains pork or lard if that matters to you.

Dish

Shanghai fried noodles

Thick, chewy wheat noodles stir-fried with dark soy sauce, cabbage and usually strips of meat until glossy and lightly caramelised — a hearty, everyday Shanghai staple sold at diners and food courts across the city.

It is filling and cheap; the usual version contains pork, so Muslim travellers should ask for a halal (清真) kitchen or a beef or vegetable version.

نحوه رسیدن
Maglev train ٨ دقیقه‎$٦–٨

The magnetic-levitation train covers the 30km from Pudong airport to Longyang Road station in about eight minutes at up to 430km/h, for ¥50 (¥40 with a same-day boarding pass). From Longyang Road you transfer to the metro for the centre, so it is a fast novelty rather than a door-to-door link.

Pudong Metro Line 2 ١٫٣ ساعترایگان – ‎$٢

The cheapest way from Pudong airport into the city: Metro Line 2 runs straight to People's Square and beyond for around ¥7, taking roughly 75–90 minutes with a same-platform change at Guanglan Road. Slow but a fraction of a taxi's cost, and it drops you right in the centre.

DiDi or taxi from Pudong ٥٠ دقیقه‎$٢١–٣٠

A metered taxi or an app-booked DiDi from Pudong airport to central Shanghai runs roughly ¥150–200 and takes about 50 minutes off-peak. Convenient with luggage and door to door; use the official rank or the DiDi pickup zone and refuse drivers who tout inside the terminal.

Hongqiao airport metro ٤٥ دقیقهرایگان – ‎$١

Shanghai's second airport, Hongqiao, sits much closer to the city and connects by Metro Lines 2 and 10 for only a few yuan, as well as by high-speed rail. If you can choose your arrival airport, Hongqiao is the cheaper and faster one for reaching the centre.

Metro (subway)رایگان – ‎$١

One of the world's largest metro systems reaches almost everywhere a visitor wants to go, cheaply and quickly, with English signage and announcements. Most rides cost only a few yuan by distance; pay with a single-ride ticket, a transport card, or a QR code through Alipay or the Metro app.

DiDi (ride-hailing)‎$١–٦

DiDi is China's Uber and the easiest way to take a car in Shanghai, with the fare fixed in the app so there is no meter or language dispute. Link a foreign card or pay through Alipay; an English-friendly booking flow is available inside Alipay if the standalone app gives trouble.

Street taxi‎$٢–٧

Licensed metered taxis are plentiful and reasonable, starting around ¥16, but few drivers speak English, so have your destination written in Chinese. Insist on the meter, avoid unmarked cars, and prefer app-booked rides late at night.

City busesرایگان – ‎$١

An extensive bus network covers the gaps the metro misses for a flat couple of yuan, paid by transport card or QR code. Routes and stops are mostly in Chinese, so buses suit confident travellers; for most visitors the metro is simpler.

Walking

Shanghai rewards walking in its older quarters — the Bund, the French Concession lanes, Yu Garden's Old City and around People's Square are all best explored on foot. Cross with care, watch for silent electric scooters, and use the metro to hop between districts.

بهترین زمان برای بازدید

اسفند–اردیبهشت و شهریور–آبان

The best times to visit Shanghai are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is mild, drier and clearer, with pleasant temperatures and blossoms in spring or crisp skies in autumn. Autumn, especially October to mid-November, is often the finest window and coincides with hairy-crab season. Try to avoid the National Day holiday (October 1–7), when domestic tourists flood the city and sights and transport are jammed. Summer (June to August) is hot, very humid and prone to heavy rain and the occasional typhoon, while winter (December to February) is cold and damp but the quietest and cheapest time, with far thinner crowds at the major sights.

ایمنی

احتیاطShanghai runs almost entirely on mobile payments through Alipay and WeChat Pay, and many shops, taxis and ticket machines no longer take cash or foreign cards easily. Set up Alipay or WeChat and link an international card before you travel, keep a little cash as backup, and you will avoid being stuck unable to pay.
هشدارTraffic is the biggest everyday danger. Cars, and especially near-silent electric scooters, often ignore crossings and pavements and come from unexpected directions, including the wrong way. Cross only with the flow of local pedestrians, look both ways twice, and never assume a green man means the road is clear.
احتیاطViolent crime against tourists is very rare and Shanghai is a very safe city to walk at night, but pickpocketing and bag-snatching can happen in the busiest tourist crushes, such as Nanjing Road, the Bund and packed metro cars. Keep your phone and wallet secured and zipped, and stay alert to the scam touts who work these same crowds.

نکات پنهان

See the Pudong skyline for free from the Bund, then walk down to the riverside for the classic night view — no observation-deck ticket needed to get the best photo of the city.
Skip the tourist teahouses and ride the metro out to Zhujiajiao water town for the day, where the canals, bridges and lanes are essentially free to enjoy.
Wander the French Concession on foot in the late afternoon — the plane-tree lanes, villas and small cafes around Wukang Road are the loveliest and cheapest thing to do in the city.

سوالات متداول

How many days do I need in Shanghai?

Three to four days is ideal: a day for the Bund, Nanjing Road and the Pudong towers, a day for Yu Garden, the Old City and the Shanghai Museum, a day in the French Concession, and time for a day trip to a water town such as Zhujiajiao. With longer you can add Disneyland or a side trip to nearby Suzhou or Hangzhou.

Do I need cash, or can I pay by phone?

Shanghai is almost fully cashless. Locals pay for nearly everything with Alipay or WeChat Pay QR codes, and many places are reluctant to handle cash. Set up Alipay or WeChat and link an international card before you arrive — both now support foreign cards — and carry a small amount of cash only as a backup.

Is Shanghai safe for tourists?

Yes, Shanghai is one of the safest big cities in the world for visitors, with very low violent crime and a strong sense of personal safety even late at night. The real risks are traffic (especially silent electric scooters), a few well-known tourist scams like the tea-house invitation and airport black taxis, and pickpocketing in crowds — all easily avoided with normal care.

How do I get from the airport into the city?

From Pudong airport, the cheapest option is Metro Line 2 (about ¥7, 75–90 minutes) straight into the centre; the maglev (¥50) is the fastest but needs a metro transfer; and a DiDi or metered taxi is around ¥150–200. Hongqiao airport is closer and connects by metro for a few yuan. Avoid drivers who approach you inside the terminal.

Can Muslim travellers find halal food in Shanghai?

Yes. Be aware that pork is very common in Shanghai cuisine — classic xiaolongbao and shengjianbao are pork by default — so check before ordering. However, Shanghai has hundreds of halal (清真) restaurants, drawing on Hui and Xinjiang Uyghur cooking, including well-known spots near the Bund and the mosques, and beef versions of local dishes at halal kitchens.
