The lively heart of Goa's beach scene, with broad sands, rows of shacks, water sports and nightlife. Calangute and Baga are the busiest and most commercial; Anjuna and Vagator are more bohemian. Free to enter; you pay only for sunbeds, food and activities.
A well-preserved 17th-century Portuguese fort above Candolim, built to guard the Mandovi river mouth, with a four-storey lighthouse and wide views over the sea. Free to wander and a favourite spot for sunset. Combine it with the beaches just below.
The UNESCO-listed churches of the old Portuguese capital, above all the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which holds the remains of St Francis Xavier, and the vast Se Cathedral. Entry is free; dress modestly and keep quiet as these are active places of worship.
A long-running market on the cliffs at Anjuna, held on Wednesdays in the tourist season, selling clothes, jewellery, spices and souvenirs. Good for browsing and people-watching. Haggle hard, as first prices are aimed at tourists and often several times the fair rate.

Almost every Goan home and simple restaurant serves its own version, and it is the dish that best captures the state's coastal, spice-rich flavour.
Order the thali version at a busy local eatery for unlimited rice, curry, a fried fish and sides at a very low price.

It is genuinely spicy and better the next day; pair it with plain rice or the local poi bread to balance the heat.

A little goes a long way; use it as a fiery side with plain rice and a cooling drink.

Rich and mildly caramelised, it is the traditional festive sweet, especially at Christmas.
Buy it from a proper Goan bakery rather than a tourist stall, and eat it slightly warm to taste the layers at their best.

Cashew feni, made only in Goa, is a protected regional product with a strong, pungent character that takes most first-timers by surprise. It is a defining part of local drinking culture.
Sip it slowly and diluted; it is much stronger than it looks, and cashew and coconut feni taste quite different, so try a little before committing.
A cooling pink digestive drink of kokum fruit and coconut milk, gently sour and lightly spiced, drunk at the end of a meal to settle a stomach full of chilli and coconut. Refreshing and non-alcoholic, it is the perfect antidote to a fiery Goan curry.
Ask for it after a spicy fish-curry meal; its cool, tangy taste balances the heat far better than water.

The government-backed app taxi runs from both Goa airports with the fare set in the app, usually cheaper and clearer than a negotiated cab. You need local data or airport wifi to book, and it is the easiest way to avoid airport fare haggling.
Official prepaid counters at Manohar (Mopa) and Dabolim airports sell fixed-fare taxis to each beach zone. Pay at the counter, take the slip and match it to your car. Convenient with luggage, though pricier than the bus for a solo traveller.
State-run Kadamba buses connect the airports and towns like Panaji and Mapusa very cheaply, but they are slow, infrequent to the beaches and awkward with heavy bags. A budget option best for confident, light-packing travellers.
The classic way to explore Goa, letting you hop between beaches and villages freely and cheaply. Wear the helmet, carry your licence and passport copy, drive cautiously on rough or sandy roads, and never ride after drinking.
The app taxi also works for trips between beaches and towns, with the price fixed in advance. Handy when you do not want to drive, though coverage thins out in remote southern spots, so allow extra time to get a car.
Cheap, colourful private and Kadamba buses run along the main coastal and inland routes. Great value and an experience in themselves, but crowded, stop-start and hard to rely on for tight schedules or late nights.
The peak and best season is the dry winter from November to February, with warm sunny days, cooler evenings and calm seas ideal for the beaches, though prices and crowds peak sharply around Christmas and New Year. October and March are pleasant shoulder months. April and May are very hot and humid, while the June-to-September monsoon brings heavy rain, rough seas and many shacks closed, though the countryside turns lush and green.
It depends on your mood. North Goa is livelier, with busier beaches, markets, water sports and nightlife around Calangute, Baga and Anjuna. South Goa is quieter, cleaner and more scenic, with relaxed beaches like Palolem and Agonda. Many visitors split their stay between the two.
A rented scooter is the most popular and flexible option for hopping between beaches, but only if you are a confident rider. Otherwise use the GoaMiles app taxi, which fixes the fare in advance, or agree a flat price with a street taxi. Public buses are cheap but slow.
November to February is the best weather, with warm, dry days and calm seas, though it is also the busiest and priciest, especially at Christmas and New Year. October and March are quieter shoulder months, while the June-to-September monsoon is wet and many shacks close.
Goa is generally relaxed and welcoming, and violent crime against visitors is uncommon. The real risks are scooter accidents, strong sea currents and, at night, drink safety and drug-related police stings. The everyday hassles are overcharging by taxis and some shacks.
Cards and UPI apps work in hotels, larger restaurants and many shops, but you will want rupees in cash for taxis, scooter rentals, small shacks, markets and beach services. Carry small notes, as change can be a problem at stalls and with drivers.
