Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates and one of the world's most striking modern metropolises, rising from the desert on the shore of the Arabian Gulf. It is famous for record-breaking architecture, from the soaring Burj Khalifa to vast shopping malls and man-made islands, yet it also keeps an older character along the historic Creek, where wooden abra boats still ferry passengers past the gold and spice souks. Visitors can ski indoors, dine at the top of a tower, wander a heritage district and ride into the dunes on a desert safari, often in a single trip. Dubai is famously safe, clean and well organised, with an excellent metro and reliable taxis, so the main things to watch are the extreme summer heat, higher prices at tourist hotspots, and a few local laws and customs worth respecting. With sunshine most of the year and easy connections, it makes a comfortable, family-friendly base for exploring the region.
