The ancient cradle of democracy beneath the Acropolis

개요

Athens is the capital of Greece and one of the world's oldest cities, where classical ruins rise above a busy, modern Mediterranean capital. The Acropolis and its Parthenon crown the city from a rocky hilltop, watching over ancient marketplaces, Roman remains and the maze-like old quarter of Plaka below. Beyond the headline sights, Athens rewards wandering, with lively squares, rooftop bars, street food and neighbourhoods like Monastiraki and Psyri that come alive in the evening. The historic centre is compact and mostly walkable, linked by a clean modern metro that also reaches the airport and port. Summers are hot and the marble underfoot can be slippery, so an early start, good shoes and plenty of water go a long way. Athens is also the natural gateway to the Greek islands, with the port of Piraeus a short metro ride away. It rewards a couple of days of history, food and easy city life.

Airport taxi to the centre
1회당
€37 ~ €54 · US$42~62

Licensed taxis charge a set flat fare between the airport and the city centre, higher at night. Confirm the fixed rate before setting off and use only the official taxi rank outside arrivals.

Metro from the airport
1인당
€8 ~ €10 · US$9~12

The metro links the airport directly with the centre for a set airport fare, far cheaper than a taxi. A discounted group ticket exists if several of you travel together.

Single metro, bus or trolley ride
1회당
€1 ~ €2 · US$1~2

One ticket covers a timed window with transfers across metro, bus and trolley. Buy a day pass if you ride often, and always validate before boarding to avoid fines.

Mid-range taverna meal
1인당
€10 ~ €26 · US$12~30

Eat a street or two away from the Acropolis and Plaka's main lanes for better food and prices. Bread and a cover charge are often added, so check the menu.

Frappe or Greek coffee
per cup
€2 ~ €4 · US$2~5

Coffee culture is strong and prices are reasonable away from the busiest tourist terraces. A frappe or freddo at a local cafe is cheap and a good way to slow down.

Gyros or souvlaki wrap
per item
€2 ~ €5 · US$3~6

Street-side gyros is one of the best cheap meals in the city. A busy local souvlaki spot costs a fraction of a sit-down restaurant for a filling wrap.

Bottled water at a kiosk
1병당
€0 ~ €1 · US$1~2

Buy water from a street kiosk or supermarket rather than at the sights, where it costs much more. Athens tap water is generally considered safe to drink.

흔한 사기

Taxi meter and airport overcharge
중간

수법: Drivers claim the meter is broken, quote an inflated flat price, run a higher night tariff by day, or add invented surcharges, especially on airport and port runs.

피하는 법: Know the fixed airport fare in advance, insist on the meter or the set rate for the airport, use a ride-hailing app where possible, and pay with small, counted notes.

Spiked-drink bar scam
높음

수법: A friendly local or 'tourist' invites a solo traveller, often near Syntagma or Omonia, to a bar where drinks are spiked or a huge bill appears, enforced by intimidating staff.

피하는 법: Be wary of strangers steering you to a specific bar, choose your own well-reviewed venue, never leave a drink unattended, and leave immediately if anything feels staged or pushy.

Fake petition and donation
낮음

수법: Someone asks you to sign a petition or donate to a 'charity', often with a clipboard, to distract you and press for money while an accomplice may target your bag.

피하는 법: Decline politely and keep walking. Do not sign anything or open your bag, and keep valuables secured when groups approach you near busy squares and sights.

Metro and crowd pickpockets
중간

수법: Thieves work the crowded metro, especially the airport and central lines, and busy tourist spots, using bumps and distractions to lift phones and wallets.

피하는 법: Keep bags zipped and in front of you, avoid back pockets, and stay alert as train doors open and close and in packed squares and markets like Monastiraki.
