Thessaloniki is Greece's second city and the capital of the north, a relaxed, food-loving port on the Thermaic Gulf with more than two thousand years of history layered into its streets. Founded in antiquity and shaped by Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule, it wears its past openly, with the Rotunda, the Arch of…

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

BougatsaSweetKonstantinos Stampoulis (Geraki) / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.5)

Bougatsa

Crisp filo pastry filled with semolina custard, cheese or minced meat, baked and cut into squares, the classic Thessaloniki breakfast. The city is considered the home of bougatsa and has bakeries dedicated to it.

The sweet custard version is dusted with sugar and cinnamon; ask whether you want sweet or savoury, as both are made fresh through the morning.

GyrosDishAntonio Fajardo i López / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Gyros

Slices of seasoned meat roasted on a vertical spit, wrapped in pita with tomato, onion, tzatziki and often fries, Greece's favourite fast food. In Thessaloniki it is a cheap, filling staple eaten day and night.

SouvlakiDishBreawycker / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Souvlaki

Small skewers of grilled pork or chicken, served in a wrap or on a plate with pita and salad. A quick, tasty and cheap meal found at grills all over the city.

KoulouriDishAndy Li / Wikimedia Commons (CC0)

Koulouri

A ring of bread crusted with sesame seeds, sold from street carts and bakeries as a cheap breakfast or snack. Thessaloniki's version is a beloved daily habit for locals on the move.

Buy it early when the batches are fresh and still slightly warm; they dry out through the day.

TsipouroDrinkPhso2 / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Tsipouro

A strong distilled grape spirit from northern Greece, served in small bottles alongside meze plates over long, sociable evenings. In Thessaloniki, ordering tsipouro with a spread of small dishes is a way of life.

It comes plain or aniseed-flavoured; sip it slowly with food rather than drinking it like a shot.

Taxi meter and overcharge

수법: Some drivers claim the meter is broken, run a night tariff by day, take a longer route, or add invented surcharges, especially on airport and late-night runs.

피하는 법: Insist on the meter or agree the fixed airport fare first, roughly know the distance, use a ride-hailing app where possible, and pay with small, counted notes.

MetroUS$1

A modern metro opened in late 2024, running under the main avenue through the centre. Fast, clean and cheap, though it does not yet reach the airport. Tap a card or buy a ticket.

City busesUS$1

An extensive bus network covers the centre, the upper town and the suburbs. The same low-cost ticket works on metro and bus. Validate on boarding and watch belongings when busy.

Walking the centre

The flat seafront and central grid are very walkable, and the promenade is a pleasure on foot. Ano Poli is a steep, cobbled climb, so keep grippy shoes for the upper town.

방문하기 좋은 시기

4월–6월 및 9월–10월

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) bring warm, pleasant weather ideal for walking the city and the seafront. July and August are hot and humid, with many locals leaving for the coast, while winter is cool, lively and cheaper but can be grey and wet.

안전

경고Summer can be hot and humid with strong sun on the exposed seafront. Start sightseeing early, carry water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and rest indoors or in shaded cafes during the hottest afternoon hours.
주의Pickpocketing happens on crowded buses, in the market lanes and at busy seafront events. Keep bags zipped and in front, avoid back pockets, and stay alert in packed spaces and around Aristotelous Square.
주의The upper town of Ano Poli is a steep climb on old cobbles and worn steps that can be slippery, especially when wet. Wear shoes with good grip and take care on the descents.

숨은 명소

Ride the metro one stop and admire the ancient finds displayed inside the brand-new central stations, unearthed during construction.
Climb to the Trigonion Tower and the Byzantine walls of Ano Poli at sunset for a free panorama over the whole city and gulf.
Graze the covered Modiano and Kapani markets for olives, cheese and tsipouro rather than a formal sit-down lunch.

자주 묻는 질문

How many days do I need in Thessaloniki?

Two days is enough for the White Tower, the Roman and Byzantine monuments, Ano Poli and plenty of eating. A third day lets you slow down or take a day trip toward Halkidiki or the wine country.

Is Thessaloniki cheaper than Athens?

Generally yes, especially for eating and drinking. It is a relaxed student and food city where meze, tsipouro and street food go a long way, though hotels can rise sharply during festivals and fairs.

Does the new metro reach the airport?

Not yet. The metro that opened in late 2024 runs through the central corridor, but the airport is still served by the express bus and taxis. The metro is best for moving across the centre.

What food is Thessaloniki known for?

It is considered Greece's food capital, famous for bougatsa and koulouri, rich meze culture, and eastern-influenced dishes brought by refugees from Asia Minor, all washed down with tsipouro.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are ideal for comfortable weather and lighter crowds. Summer is hot and humid and many locals leave for the beaches, while winter is cool but lively with a strong cafe and nightlife scene.
