Watch out in Delhi

'Your hotel is closed' diversionConfirm your booking directly with the hotel by phone, insist on being taken to your actual address, and ignore unsolicited 'official tourist offices' near the station and markets.
Gem and carpet export scamNever buy valuables to 'resell for profit' on a stranger's promise. Treat any unsolicited investment or export deal as a scam and walk away.
Auto-rickshaw overchargingUse a ride-hailing app with a fixed price, or insist on the meter and know the rough fare first. Decline detours to shops and pay only what was agreed.

Delhi is India's capital and one of its oldest continuously inhabited cities, a sprawling metropolis where centuries of empires have left forts, tombs and mosques scattered among modern avenues and crowded bazaars. Old Delhi, around the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, is a dense maze of markets, street food and rickshaws,…

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Butter ChickenDishMack Male / Wikimedia Commons

Butter Chicken

Tandoor-roasted chicken simmered in a rich, mildly spiced tomato-butter-cream gravy, invented at Delhi's Moti Mahal restaurant and now eaten worldwide. Scoop it up with naan or tandoori roti at one of the many restaurants still tracing their recipe back to the original.

Order it at a Chandni Chowk or Daryaganj restaurant for a version close to the dish's roots.

Chole BhatureDishGaurav Dhwaj Khadka / Wikimedia Commons

Chole Bhature

Spicy, tangy stewed chickpeas served with bhature, a pillowy deep-fried bread far larger and puffier than a naan. It is a hearty breakfast-or-lunch favourite, usually eaten by hand with pickled onion and chilli on the side.

Daryaganj and Connaught Place have some of the city's best-known stalls.

Paranthe Wali Gali Stuffed ParathasDishScott Dexter / Wikimedia Commons

Paranthe Wali Gali Stuffed Parathas

A narrow Chandni Chowk lane whose shops have deep-fried stuffed flatbreads for over a century, filled with anything from spiced potato and paneer to more unusual choices like banana or crushed almonds. Each paratha is cooked to order and served with a small array of chutneys and vegetables.

Go hungry; portions come with several side dishes included.

Delhi Chaat (Golgappa and More)DishYusuke Kawasaki / Wikimedia Commons

Delhi Chaat (Golgappa and More)

Delhi's street-food obsession in miniature: crisp hollow puris filled with spiced tamarind water (golgappa), plus tangy-sweet snacks like aloo tikki and papdi chaat, all built around the same sweet-sour-spicy hit. Chandni Chowk is considered the street-food capital of the city.

Eat where the local crowd is thickest and the puris are being filled to order in front of you.

Daulat ki ChaatSweetRavi Dwivedi / Wikimedia Commons

Daulat ki Chaat

A winter-only Old Delhi speciality unlike any other Indian dessert: sweetened milk foam, whisked by hand overnight in the cold night air until impossibly light, then dusted with sugar and saffron. Most foreign visitors have never seen a dish quite like it, and it disappears once the weather warms up.

Look for it only between roughly November and February, mainly around Chandni Chowk.

방문하기 좋은 시기

1월–3월 및 10월–12월

The cooler months from October to March are by far the most comfortable for sightseeing, with mild days and cool evenings. April to June is extremely hot, the monsoon brings humidity and rain from July, and air pollution often peaks around late autumn.

안전

경고Delhi's air quality can be very poor, especially in late autumn and winter. Check an air-quality app, limit strenuous outdoor time on bad days, and consider a mask if you are sensitive or have breathing conditions.
주의Stick to sealed bottled or filtered water, avoid tap water and ice of unknown origin, and choose busy places cooking fresh. Building up gradually helps avoid the common travellers' stomach upset.
주의Traffic is dense and fast with assertive driving, and crossings can be chaotic. Cross with care, ideally with locals or at signals and footbridges, and stay alert to autos and motorbikes weaving through.

숨은 명소

Visit Humayun's Tomb in the late afternoon for golden light and far fewer crowds than the busiest sights.
Explore Old Delhi's lanes around Chandni Chowk on foot or by cycle-rickshaw for street food and market colour.
Use Delhi as a base and take an early fast train to Agra for the Taj Mahal as a comfortable day trip.

자주 묻는 질문

How many days should I spend in Delhi?

Two to three days covers Old Delhi, the main monuments like Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar, and New Delhi, and lets you slot in a day trip to Agra by fast train.

Is it safe to eat street food in Delhi?

It can be a highlight if you are careful. Choose busy stalls cooking fresh with high turnover, avoid tap-water ice and uncovered raw items, and drink only sealed bottled water.

What is the best way to get around Delhi?

The metro is clean, cheap and beats the traffic for most sights. For door-to-door trips use a ride-hailing app or a metered auto, and agree fares in advance to avoid overcharging.

How do I avoid the common tourist scams?

Confirm your hotel directly, ignore 'tourist offices' and anyone saying your hotel is closed, buy tickets only at official counters, and never buy goods to 'resell for profit' on a stranger's promise.

When is the best time to visit Delhi?

October to March is the most comfortable, with mild weather for sightseeing. Summer is extremely hot, and air pollution tends to peak in late autumn, so check air-quality forecasts.
