Unmetered taxi or driver overchargeBook through a ride-hailing app where possible, or agree your hotel's arranged transfer rate in advance. Confirm the fare before getting in if you must use an unmetered driver.
Unofficial tour or activity bookingBook activities directly through the official Experience AlUla website or app, or through operators listed there. Be wary of unusually cheap Hegra or Sharaan trips offered outside these channels.
Inflated date and souvenir pricingBuy dates and local produce at a supermarket or a market stall away from the main tourist stops for a fairer price, and compare a couple of stalls before buying at a heritage site.

Visão geral

AlUla is a vast desert oasis in north-west Saudi Arabia, home to Hegra, the kingdom's first UNESCO World Heritage Site and a sister city to Jordan's Petra, with more than a hundred monumental tombs carved into sandstone outcrops by the ancient Nabateans. Beyond the tombs, AlUla mixes dramatic natural rock formations…

Hegra (Mada'in Salih)

AlUla Old Town

A maze of restored mud-brick houses and narrow alleys that was inhabited for centuries until the 1980s. Free to wander from the designated parking areas, with an optional paid storytelling walk that brings the old souq and homes to life.

AlUla Dates

AlUla's oasis produces tens of thousands of tonnes of dates a year across varieties like Barni, Mabroom, Majhool and Anbara, grown among more than two million palm trees alongside citrus groves. Fresh, high-quality dates here taste noticeably different from the dried, packaged dates most visitors know.

Buy dates directly from a farm stall or dedicated date shop in the oasis rather than a souvenir kiosk near the main sights, for fresher stock and a fairer price.

Arabic Coffee (Qahwa) with DatesDrinkSlywire / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Arabic Coffee (Qahwa) with Dates

Light, cardamom-scented coffee poured from a long-spouted brass dallah into small handleless cups, always served with dates as a ritual of Saudi hospitality. It is central to how AlUla's desert camps and resorts welcome guests in the evening.

Accept a refill or two if offered, and give your empty cup a small side-to-side shake when you are finished, a discreet, well-understood signal.

Kabsa

Saudi Arabia's iconic national dish, fragrant spiced rice cooked with tomatoes, onions and warm spices, topped with slow-cooked chicken or lamb, appears on menus across AlUla from simple local restaurants to resort dining rooms.

Try it at a family-run local restaurant in town rather than only at a resort, for a more affordable and often more generous portion.

Dish

Jareesh

A hearty porridge of cracked wheat simmered slowly with meat, onions and warming spices until thick and creamy, a home-style dish rooted in the wider Najd and north-west region's traditional cooking.

Look for it at heritage-style restaurants in the Old Town area, especially if you are visiting in the cooler months.

Dish

Hejazi Rice with Daqqous

A milk- or broth-cooked rice dish served with roast chicken and daqqous, a sharp, garlicky tomato sauce, reflecting AlUla's position between the Najd interior and the Hejaz coast on old trade and pilgrimage routes.

It is a good order if you want something a little different from kabsa, ask a local restaurant if daqqous is on the menu that day.

Unmetered taxi or driver overcharge

Como funciona: With no public transport network and limited ride-hailing coverage compared to Riyadh or Jeddah, some drivers waiting near the airport or resorts quote an inflated flat fare to visitors who have no easy way to compare prices.

Como evitar: Book through a ride-hailing app where possible, or agree your hotel's arranged transfer rate in advance. Confirm the fare before getting in if you must use an unmetered driver.

Melhor época para visitar

janeiro–abril e outubro–dezembro

October through April is by far the most comfortable stretch, with daytime temperatures around 15-27C and cool desert nights ideal for balloon flights and stargazing. From June to September, daytime highs regularly pass 40C and can reach 50C, making most outdoor activities impractical.

Segurança

AvisoSummer daytime temperatures can reach 45-50C. Carry water at all times, wear a wide-brimmed hat and breathable clothing, and shift outdoor plans like balloon flights and desert safaris to the cooler months or early morning and evening.
CautelaSelf-driving inside protected archaeological zones like Hegra is not permitted, and off-road desert routes are easy to get lost on without a guide. Stick to guided tours and marked roads for anything beyond the main sealed routes.
CautelaAs Saudi Arabia's flagship international tourism zone, AlUla has a notably relaxed dress code, women are not required to wear an abaya or headscarf, but modest, lightweight clothing covering shoulders and knees is still expected and practical for sun protection.

Jóias escondidas

Watch the sun set behind Elephant Rock once the day-trip crowds thin out, when the sandstone glows deep orange.
Take the free Old Town shuttle in the late afternoon and linger until the mud-brick alleys are lit for the evening.
Book a dark-sky stargazing dinner on a clear, moonless night for one of the best naked-eye skies in Saudi Arabia.

Perguntas frequentes

How many days do I need in AlUla?

Three to four days lets you cover Hegra, Elephant Rock, the Old Town and Maraya at a relaxed pace, with time for one bigger experience like a hot air balloon flight or a Sharaan safari.

Do I need a car in AlUla?

A rental car or pre-booked transfers are close to essential, since the main sights are spread across a large desert area with no public bus network connecting them.

Can I visit Hegra without a guide?

No. Hegra is a protected archaeological site and all visits are guided, ticketed and time-slotted through the official Experience AlUla platform.

When should I avoid visiting?

The peak summer months from roughly June to September bring extreme heat, often 40-50C, that makes most outdoor sightseeing impractical. October to April is far more comfortable.

What should I wear in AlUla?

AlUla has a relaxed dress code for an international tourism zone, but modest, lightweight clothing covering shoulders and knees is still the practical and respectful choice, especially for desert excursions and heritage sites.
