The golden mountain temple that is Chiang Mai's most sacred and iconic sight, high on Doi Suthep with sweeping views over the city. Climb the 306-step naga stairway or take the small funicular, and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Go early to beat the tour buses and the haze.
The most revered temple inside the Old City, a beautiful Lanna-style complex housing the venerated Phra Singh Buddha image. Entry is by small donation, with a modest fee for the main hall. A calm, central stop that pairs well with the surrounding temples on foot.
A massive, partly ruined 14th-century brick chedi at the heart of the Old City, once the tallest structure in the Lanna kingdom. A small ticket covers entry, and the grounds host a relaxed 'monk chat' where visitors can talk with resident monks.
Every Sunday evening the Old City's main street closes to traffic and fills with handicraft stalls, street food and live music, from Tha Phae Gate deep into the walls. Free to wander and the city's best market experience; go hungry and keep an eye on your bag in the crush.

It reflects the Burmese and Yunnanese influences on Lanna cooking and is done better in Chiang Mai than anywhere else.
Squeeze in the lime and stir the pickled greens through before eating, and look for a busy local shop rather than a tourist restaurant for the best bowl.

The fastest way in, around 75-80 minutes from either Bangkok airport, with frequent budget and full-service flights. Often barely more than the train once you value the time saved.
The scenic classic: a roughly 12-hour sleeper from Bangkok, best booked in a second-class air-conditioned sleeper berth well ahead. Slower than flying but a comfortable, memorable journey.
Frequent VIP and express coaches make the roughly 10-hour run for the lowest fare. Overnight services save a night's accommodation; choose a reputable company for comfort and safety.
The shared red trucks are Chiang Mai's cheap workhorse, flagged down anywhere and shared with others heading the same way. Tell the driver your destination and pay the flat local fare on arrival.
The ride-hailing app gives a fixed, fair price with no haggling, useful for the airport, longer trips or late at night. Cars and, in places, motorbike taxis are available in the app.
A cheap, flexible way to explore the city and nearby hills if you are a confident rider with the correct licence. Wear a helmet, ride carefully in traffic, and rent only from a reputable shop with clear paperwork.
The cool, dry season from November to February is by far the best time to visit, with warm days, cool evenings and clear mountain air. March to April is the burning season, when agricultural fires blanket the valley in smoke and air quality can turn genuinely unhealthy, so it is best avoided if you can. The June-to-October rainy season is green and quiet with short, heavy downpours, and the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong lantern festivals light up the city in November.
Three to four days lets you cover the Old City temples, a trip up to Doi Suthep, a cooking class or elephant sanctuary day, and an evening market at a relaxed pace. Add more if you want to trek, visit hill-tribe villages or day-trip to the mountains.
Roughly late February to April, when agricultural fires cause heavy smoke haze and poor air quality across the valley. If you have a choice, visit between November and February instead; if you go in the burning season, monitor the air-quality index and carry a mask.
Pick a genuine no-riding, no-show sanctuary focused on rescue and observation, where you feed and walk beside the elephants rather than ride them. Check recent independent reviews and avoid anywhere offering saddles, tricks or chained animals.
Walk inside the compact Old City, and use the cheap shared red songthaews or a Grab for anywhere further out, including the airport. Rent a scooter only if you are a confident, licensed rider.
