Mumbai's signature waterfront arch, built to overlook the harbour and now the city's busiest meeting point, free to admire day and night. The square buzzes with vendors, photographers and touts, so enjoy the monument but keep your bag close. It is also the jetty for ferries to Elephanta Island.
A UNESCO-listed set of rock-cut Hindu cave temples on Gharapuri (Elephanta) Island, reached by a roughly one-hour ferry from the Gateway of India. The carvings, including the great three-headed Shiva, are remarkable. Go early, allow half a day, and note the site is closed on Mondays.
A sweeping seafront promenade curving along the Arabian Sea, lined with Art Deco buildings and, after dark, the string of lights that gives it the nickname the Queen's Necklace. Free and open at all hours, it is where Mumbaikars stroll, court and watch the sunset. Best in the evening.
A vast Victorian-Gothic railway station, a UNESCO World Heritage Site once called Victoria Terminus and still one of the busiest stations in India. Admire the ornate stone facade and, if you can, step inside to feel the rush of the suburban network. Free to view from outside.

Cheap, filling and sold on almost every corner, it is the true fast food of the city.
Eat it fresh and hot from a busy stall; ask for it with extra dry garlic chutney and a fried green chilli on the side, the local way.

Born in the mills of Mumbai as a quick workers' meal, it is now a favourite at Chowpatty beach.
Have it at a beachside or busy local stall in the evening, and do not be shy about the generous knob of butter that makes it what it is.

Eat it the moment it is mixed, before the puffed rice softens; Chowpatty and Marine Drive stalls are the classic spots.

Warn the cook if you want it milder, and mix the crunchy topping in gradually; a glass of buttermilk helps tame the heat.
A small glass of strong, sweet, milky, spiced tea, the 'cutting' being a half-measure meant to be drunk quickly on a break or shared between two. Sold at every corner tea stall for a few rupees, it is the social lubricant and everyday fuel of the city.

The official prepaid and cool-cab counters inside the terminal fix the fare to your destination on a receipt, avoiding negotiation. Convenient with luggage or on late arrivals, with a normal night surcharge. Use the marked counter, not a tout.
Ride-hailing apps work at both terminals from designated pick-up points and are often cheaper and clearer than a taxi, with the fare fixed in the app. You will need a local SIM or airport wifi to book and find your driver.
The cheapest link is a short taxi or rickshaw to Andheri or Vile Parle station on the Western Line, then a local train south to Churchgate in around 40 minutes. Very cheap and fast, but crowded and not ideal with heavy luggage.
Mumbai's lifeline, the local trains carry millions daily and are the fastest way to cover the long north-south city for only a few rupees. They are packed at peak times, so travel off-peak, watch the open doors, and use first class or the women's carriage for space.
The classic kaali-peeli taxis run mainly in south and central Mumbai and are metered and cheap. Insist on the meter and a fare card; they are handy where auto-rickshaws are not allowed, though app cabs are often clearer on price.
Three-wheeler autos are the cheap workhorses of the suburbs but are barred from the southern tip of the city. They are metered, so ask for the meter and the conversion card, and keep small change handy for short hops.
Ride-hailing apps cover the whole city, fix the fare in advance and track the route, which makes them the easiest way to avoid fare disputes. Prices rise in rush hour and rain and fall late at night.
The southern district around Colaba, the Gateway and Fort is compact, flat and full of grand architecture, best explored on foot. Traffic is heavy and crossings are informal, so cross with the crowd and watch for bikes weaving through.
The best time to visit is the cool, dry winter from November to February, with pleasant days around 20 to 30 degrees ideal for sightseeing. March to May grows hot and very humid, and the southwest monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and occasional flooding that can snarl traffic and trains, though the green, storm-washed city has its own dramatic appeal.
Two to three days cover the southern highlights: the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Colaba, a museum and a half-day trip to the Elephanta Caves, with time for street food and a sunset. Add more days for Bollywood studio tours, markets or day trips out of the city.
Yes, Mumbai is generally safe by big-city standards and locals are welcoming. Violent crime against visitors is rare; the main issues are taxi and rickshaw drivers avoiding the meter, crowds and petty theft, and the monsoon, all of which are manageable with a little care and ride-hailing apps.
For south Mumbai, walking plus black-and-yellow taxis or Uber and Ola works well. For longer trips north, the suburban local trains are cheapest and fastest but very crowded at peak times. Auto-rickshaws serve the suburbs but not the southern tip.
The monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and occasional flooding that can disrupt travel, and the pre-monsoon months of April and May are hot and very humid. The cool, dry winter from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit.
India uses the Indian rupee (INR). Cards and UPI apps are widely accepted in hotels, malls and restaurants, but carry cash in small notes for taxis, rickshaws, street food, markets and entry fees, where cash is still king.
