It is very rich and sweet, so a small spoonful with bitter cardamom coffee is the traditional balance.

In Muscat it perfumes the Mutrah Souq, where it is sold by grade alongside clay burners, and it makes an evocative, lightweight souvenir.
The pale, clean hojari grades are the most prized; buy a small bag with an inexpensive burner and a bag of charcoal discs.

Orange-and-white taxis wait at Muscat International Airport and reach the central districts in around half an hour. Not metered, so agree the fare first; convenient with luggage but pricier than a booked app car.
Booking a Careem or Uber from the airport fixes the price up front and is usually cheaper than a rank taxi. Check the local pickup point for ride-hailing, which may be a short walk from arrivals.
The national bus company runs an inexpensive air-conditioned service between the airport and the city. The budget option, slower than a taxi and better suited to light luggage and flexible timing.
Ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around Muscat, with clear pricing and no bargaining. The city is spread out, so app cars are the practical default for most visitors.
Official orange-and-white taxis can be flagged on the street but have no meters. Always agree the fare before setting off, and expect higher opening quotes near tourist sights.
Clean, cheap, air-conditioned public buses cover the main routes across the city. Great value and comfortable, though less frequent and slower than a taxi for shorter hops.
The cool season from November to March is by far the best time to visit, with warm, dry, sunny days ideal for the mosque, the souq, beaches and desert trips. April and October are hot but manageable, while May to September is very hot, often above 40C, and humid on the coast, making midday sightseeing tough.
Two to three days covers the Grand Mosque, Mutrah Souq and Corniche, the Opera House and the museums at a relaxed pace. Add a day or two for coastal wadis, the sinkhole or a desert night to round out a trip.
Very. Oman is one of the safest countries in the region with low crime and welcoming people. The main issues are the summer heat and taxi overcharging rather than any real danger, and solo and female travellers generally feel comfortable.
Dress modestly, keeping shoulders and knees covered in public. At the Grand Mosque women must cover their hair and wear long sleeves and trousers or a long skirt, and everyone needs long clothing. Modest swimwear is fine on public beaches.
Haggle in the souq, where first prices are high, but malls, restaurants and supermarkets have fixed prices. Cards are widely accepted, though carry some rial cash for taxis, the souq and small local eateries.
Ride-hailing apps like Careem and Uber are the easiest and clearest-priced option. Street taxis have no meters so agree fares first, cheap Mwasalat buses cover main routes, and renting a car is best for day trips beyond the city.
