A direct train between Malpensa Airport and central Milan (Cadorna or Centrale) in about fifty minutes, avoiding road traffic. The simplest and best-value link from the main international airport.
Linate, the close-in airport, is now linked to the centre by the M4 metro line in around fifteen minutes on a standard urban ticket. Fast and very cheap if you fly into Linate rather than Malpensa.
Licensed white taxis charge a single regulated flat fare between Malpensa and central Milan, with no meter. Best for groups or lots of luggage; use only the official rank and refuse touts inside the terminal.
Milan has a clean, efficient metro of several lines reaching the Duomo, the stations and most districts. Fast for longer hops, though the central sights around the Duomo are close together on foot.
A dense surface network of trams, some of them vintage, and buses fills the gaps the metro misses. Buy and validate a ticket before or on boarding, and watch your belongings on busy central routes.
The core between the Duomo, the Galleria, La Scala and the Sforza Castle is compact and pleasant on foot. Comfortable shoes and a relaxed pace let you take in the shop windows and squares.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer mild, pleasant weather and are the liveliest seasons, though design and fashion weeks can fill hotels. July and August are hot and humid, with many businesses closing in mid-August, while winter is cold and grey but atmospheric, especially around the Christmas panettone season.
