Venice

A city of canals, bridges and centuries of maritime splendour

Обзор

Venice is built across more than a hundred small islands in a lagoon on Italy's northeast coast, laced together by canals and stone bridges instead of roads. At its heart, St Mark's Square opens onto the lagoon beside the ornate St Mark's Basilica and the grand Doge's Palace, once the seat of the Venetian Republic. The Grand Canal winds through the city lined with centuries-old palazzi, best seen from the deck of a public vaporetto or, for a splurge, a gondola. Away from the crowded main sights, quiet residential sestieri reward slow wandering, with local bacari serving small plates and cheap wine. Venice is entirely pedestrian, so expect to walk a great deal and carry luggage over bridges. It is also expensive and busy in peak season, so a little planning around timing, tickets and where to eat goes a long way.

Since July 2025, entry is no longer free: a timed-entry ticket (from about EUR10 basilica-only, up to EUR30 for a full combo ticket with the Pala d'Oro and Museum/Loggia) must be booked online in advance, as there is no on-site ticket office.

Grand Canal by vaporetto

Впечатление

8–10 € · 9–11 $ 45 мин

Gondola ride

Впечатление

A classic, if pricey, half-hour glide through the narrower canals, away from the Grand Canal's traffic. Official fares are fixed by the city per half hour and are higher after dark.

Rialto Bridge

Что платят местные — проверьте расчёт перед тем, как платить наличными.

Single vaporetto ticket
за поездку
8–10 € · 9–11 $

A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes including transfers in one direction. If you will take more than two or three rides in a day, a day pass is better value.

24-hour vaporetto pass
с человека
23–25 € · 27–29 $

Pays for itself quickly if you are hopping between sights or visiting Murano and Burano. Multi-day passes are also available and worth it for longer stays.

Standard gondola ride
per gondola
90–110 € · 104–127 $

Official rates are fixed by the gondoliers' association for a set half-hour and rise after early evening. Confirm the price and duration with the gondolier before boarding, and note the fare is per gondola, not per person.

Restaurant cover charge (coperto)
с человека
1–5 € · 2–6 $

Most sit-down restaurants add a small per-person cover charge for bread and table service, which is standard practice in Italy and should be listed on the menu. It is separate from a service charge, so check both.

Mid-range restaurant meal
с человека
30–55 € · 35–63 $

Restaurants directly on St Mark's Square or along the main tourist routes charge significantly more. Walk a few streets into a quieter sestiere for better value and often better food.

Espresso at the bar
per cup
1–2 € · 1–2 $

Drinking your coffee standing at the counter is far cheaper than sitting at a table, where a seating surcharge applies almost everywhere, especially around St Mark's Square.

Short private water taxi ride
за поездку
61–87 € · 70–100 $

Water taxis are a fast, comfortable but expensive alternative to the vaporetto. Agree the fare before boarding or confirm the metered rate, since informal touts at the station and airport often quote inflated prices.

Частые обманы

Gondola and water taxi overcharging
Средняя

Как это работает: Unofficial touts or unlicensed operators, especially near the station and airport, quote a price well above the official rate for a gondola or water taxi, then add extra charges once you are aboard.

Как этого избежать: Use only official gondola stands or licensed water taxi ranks, confirm the price and duration before boarding, and know the standard published rates in advance so you can spot an inflated quote.

Seafood bill shock
Средняя

Как это работает: Some restaurants near tourist areas sell seafood priced by weight without displaying it clearly, or add a coperto and service charge that pushes a modest-looking meal to a surprising total.

Как этого избежать: Always ask the exact price per hundred grams for seafood before ordering, and check the menu for the coperto and service charge in advance so the final bill holds no surprises.

Fake designer goods
Низкая

Как это работает: Street vendors, sometimes operating illegally near major sights, sell counterfeit bags, sunglasses and accessories branded as genuine designer items.

Как этого избежать: Assume street-stall 'designer' goods are fakes. Buying counterfeit items can carry fines in Italy, so shop at licensed stores if you want the real thing.

Pigeon or costume photo fee
Низкая

Как это работает: Someone offers to take your photo with pigeons, a Carnival costume, or a prop near St Mark's Square, then demands payment afterward, sometimes more than expected.

Как этого избежать: Agree a price before any photo is taken, or politely decline and take your own picture instead. Feeding pigeons in St Mark's Square is also officially discouraged.

Как добраться
Alilaguna airport boat 1,3 ч15–17 € · 17–20 $

A public water shuttle links Marco Polo Airport with several stops in Venice, including near St Mark's Square. Slower than a water taxi but far cheaper, and a scenic way to arrive.

Train to Santa Lucia station 4 ч9–52 € · 10–60 $

High-speed and regional trains connect Venice with Milan, Florence, Rome and other Italian cities, arriving right at the edge of the historic centre. Book ahead for the best fares on high-speed services.

Bus to Piazzale Roma 25 мин10–12 € · 11–14 $

Coaches from the airport or other cities arrive at Piazzale Roma, the only road access point into central Venice. From there, all onward travel within the city is by foot or boat.

Как передвигаться
Vaporetto (water bus)8–23 € · 9–26 $

The main form of public transport in Venice, running set routes along canals and to the islands. Validate your ticket or pass at the electronic reader before boarding.

Walking

Venice has no cars, so walking is the default way to get almost everywhere in the historic centre. Expect narrow lanes, frequent bridges with steps, and to get pleasantly lost.

Traghetto gondola-ferry crossing2–3 € · 2–3 $

A cheap way to cross the Grand Canal where there is no nearby bridge, using a shared standing gondola-style ferry. Locals typically stand for the short crossing.

Лучшее время для посещения

апрель–июнь и сентябрь–октябрь

Late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) bring mild weather and slightly thinner crowds than peak summer. Winter can bring occasional acqua alta flooding but also a quieter, atmospheric city, while July and August are hot, humid and heavily crowded.

Безопасность

ПредупреждениеSeasonal high tides, mainly between autumn and early spring, can flood St Mark's Square and low-lying areas with little warning. Check tide forecasts, follow posted walkways, and keep footwear appropriate for shallow water.
ОсторожноDense crowds around St Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge and vaporetto stops are prime spots for pickpocketing. Keep bags zipped and in front of you, and stay alert in the busiest chokepoints.
ОсторожноHundreds of stone bridges have steps and can be slippery when wet, and pulling luggage over them is tiring. Wear supportive shoes and consider a bag with straps rather than only wheels.

Скрытые жемчужины

Walk into a quieter sestiere like Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for the same canals and bridges with a fraction of the crowds and cheaper meals.
Take vaporetto line 1 end to end along the Grand Canal as a budget alternative to a gondola for seeing the palazzi.
Visit St Mark's Square at dawn before the tour groups and day-trippers arrive, when the light on the basilica is at its best.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

How many days do I need in Venice?

Two to three days covers the main sights, a canal ride and time to wander the quieter neighbourhoods without rushing. A day trip to Murano and Burano is worth an extra half day.

Is a gondola ride worth it?

It is a memorable but expensive experience rather than the cheapest way to see the canals. For budget-conscious travellers, a vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal offers similar views for far less.

Is Venice walkable with luggage?

The historic centre is entirely pedestrian with no cars, and most bridges have steps, so wheeled luggage can be awkward. A backpack or bag with sturdy handles makes getting to your accommodation easier.

What is acqua alta and should I worry about it?

It is a seasonal high tide that can flood low-lying areas, mainly from autumn to early spring. The city posts warnings and raised walkways when it happens, so plan footwear accordingly if visiting in that window.

Is Venice expensive?

Yes, Venice is one of Italy's pricier cities, especially for accommodation and dining near the main sights. Eating and staying a short walk from St Mark's Square noticeably reduces costs.

Do I need to pay a tourist entry fee to visit Venice?

Day visitors may need to pay a small access contribution on certain peak dates, booked online in advance; requirements and dates change, so check the current rules before your trip.
