Cusco

The Inca capital in the Andes and gateway to Machu Picchu

ภาพรวม

Cusco is the historic heart of the Andes and the former capital of the Inca empire, set high in the Peruvian mountains at around 3,400 metres. Its steep cobbled streets mix massive Inca stone walls with Spanish colonial churches and arcaded plazas, and its markets and workshops keep Andean culture vividly alive. For most travellers Cusco is also the base for the Sacred Valley and the famous citadel of Machu Picchu, reached by train through a dramatic river gorge. Because of the altitude it is wise to arrive slowly, rest on the first day, and drink plenty of water and herbal tea before tackling long days out. Beyond the big sights, Cusco rewards wandering its neighbourhoods, tasting Andean food and browsing textiles and crafts. Give it several days to acclimatise, explore the valley and reach Machu Picchu without rushing. It is one of South America's most rewarding and atmospheric cities.

Fake tour agencies and tickets
สูง

วิธีการทำงาน: Unregistered agencies or street sellers offer cheap Machu Picchu tours or 'tickets' that turn out to be invalid, overpriced or non-existent, sometimes taking a deposit and vanishing.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Book Machu Picchu entry and trains through official channels or a well-reviewed licensed agency. Get written confirmation and never pay large sums to a street tout.

Altitude-remedy overcharging
ต่ำ

วิธีการทำงาน: Vendors near sights sell coca sweets, teas or 'altitude pills' to newly arrived visitors at several times the normal shop price.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Buy remedies from a pharmacy or ordinary shop, not from touts at viewpoints. Many hotels offer coca tea free, and simple rest and water help most.

Market shortchange
ปานกลาง

วิธีการทำงาน: In busy markets or taxis a seller returns the wrong change, claims you paid with a smaller note, or rushes the transaction to confuse you.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Count your change before moving on, state clearly the value of the note you hand over, and keep small denominations to pay closer to the exact price.

Taxi overcharging
ปานกลาง

วิธีการทำงาน: Drivers, especially at the airport or bus terminal, quote inflated fares to arriving tourists or claim a much higher price on arrival than agreed.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Agree the fare before getting in, use an official airport taxi desk or a booking app, and know the rough local price for your route in advance.

การเดินทางไป
Flight to Cusco 1.5 ชม.PEN 136-408 · US$40-120

Most visitors fly in from Lima or other Peruvian cities, which is by far the fastest way. Book ahead in high season and allow a rest day for the altitude on arrival.

Long-distance bus 7 ชม.PEN 51-204 · US$15-60

Comfortable coaches link Cusco with other regions such as the south and the coast. Much cheaper than flying but far longer; overnight services save a day.

Airport taxi 20 นาทีPEN 10-27 · US$3-8

The airport is close to the centre, so the ride is short and cheap. Use the official taxi desk or a booking app and agree the fare to avoid overcharging on arrival.

การเดินทางรอบๆ
City taxiPEN 3-10 · US$1-3

Handy for the steep streets and after dark. Fares are low but there are no meters, so agree the price first or use an app, and prefer clearly marked taxis.

Combis and colectivosPEN 1-3 · US$0-1

Shared minibuses and cars are the cheapest way to reach the Sacred Valley and outer districts. Basic and crowded but very economical; watch your belongings.

Walking the centre

The historic core is compact and best seen on foot, though the hills feel harder at altitude. Take it slowly, especially in your first day or two.

ช่วงเวลาที่ดีที่สุดในการมาเยือน

พฤษภาคม–กันยายน

The dry season from May to September brings sunny days and clear skies, ideal for Machu Picchu and mountain trails, though nights are cold and it is the busiest, priciest time. The wet season from November to March is greener and quieter but brings frequent afternoon rain and some trail closures.

ความปลอดภัย

คำเตือนCusco sits at high altitude and altitude sickness is common on arrival. Rest on your first day, drink plenty of water, eat lightly, avoid heavy alcohol, and see a doctor if symptoms are severe. Consider sleeping lower in the Sacred Valley first.
ระวังPickpocketing and bag-snatching occur in crowded markets, busy streets and on shared transport. Keep valuables out of sight, wear bags in front in crowds, and stay alert around the main plaza at night.
ระวังThe high-altitude sun is strong even when the air feels cool, and nights get cold. Use sunscreen and a hat by day, and bring warm layers for evenings and early-morning tours.

จุดลับน่าไป

Spend your first night lower in the Sacred Valley to acclimatise more gently before Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Look for a set lunch menu in a local restaurant for a filling, authentic meal at a fraction of tourist prices.
Wander the San Blas neighbourhood above the centre for artisan workshops and quiet viewpoints over the rooftops.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

How many days do I need in Cusco?

Plan at least three to four days to acclimatise, see the Sacred Valley and visit Machu Picchu without rushing. Adding a rest day early on greatly reduces altitude problems.

How do I deal with the altitude?

Arrive slowly, rest on the first day, drink water and herbal tea, eat lightly and avoid heavy alcohol. Sleeping first in the lower Sacred Valley helps, and seek medical advice if you feel very unwell.

How do I get to Machu Picchu from Cusco?

Most visitors take a train from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes, then a short bus up to the site, with a timed entry ticket. Book the ticket, train and bus in advance, as places are limited.

Do I need to book Machu Picchu tickets ahead?

Yes. Daily entry numbers are capped and popular dates and circuits sell out, so buy your entry ticket and train early through official channels rather than from street sellers.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season from May to September offers the clearest weather for the mountains and ruins but is the busiest. The wetter months are quieter and greener, with more afternoon rain and the odd trail closure.
