Taif is a highland city in western Saudi Arabia, set about 1,900 metres up in the Sarawat Mountains above Mecca, and it feels a world apart from the hot coastal plains below. Known across the Kingdom as the City of Roses, it is famous for the fragrant damask roses grown on hundreds of terraced farms, for cool summers…

Shubra Palace

An elegant early-1900s palace built for the Sharif of Mecca, blending Ottoman, Hijazi and Roman-influenced design with carved wooden rawasheen screens and marble halls. Now a regional museum, it displays antique jewellery, weapons, pottery and old photographs. Entry is usually free or a token fee; allow about an hour for the facade and interior woodwork.

Al Hada cable car

A cable car runs down the steep Al Hada escarpment between the mountaintop and Al-Kurr village, with sweeping views over hairpin bends, cliffs and, in season, green terraces. There is a hotel, restaurants and a small amusement park up top. Go on a clear day and expect queues, cooler air and a breeze at altitude.

Damask rose farm tour

In spring, working rose farms around Al Hada open for tours where you can walk the damask-rose terraces and watch petals distilled into rose water and precious rose oil. You can sample and buy rose water, jam and attar at the source. The bloom peaks from late March into April; outside that window the farms are much quieter.

Al Shafa highlands

A green highland area of orchards, viewpoints and terraced farms on the escarpment south-west of Taif, cooler and often misty. It is a favourite weekend escape for picnics and for honey and fruit stalls, with long views toward the coastal plain. Bring a light jacket, as evenings can be chilly even in summer.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Saleeg

The signature dish of the Taif region, saleeg is a comforting bowl of short-grain rice slow-cooked in meat broth and milk until soft and creamy, like a savoury risotto, and topped with chicken or lamb and a little clarified butter. It is Hijazi home cooking at its most beloved and a must-try in Taif.

Order it at a restaurant known for saleeg rather than a generic grill, and eat it hot; a spoon of the accompanying sauce or a dusting of black pepper lifts it.

Taif rose (attar and rose water)

The 30-petalled damask rose is Taif's emblem, grown on hundreds of terraced farms and distilled into fragrant rose water and precious rose oil (attar) used in perfume, cooking and even the washing of the Kaaba. Visiting a farm at harvest to smell and taste the distillation is a signature Taif experience.

Buy rose water and oil at the source or a reputable shop; pure attar is very costly, so treat cheap 'Taif rose oil' with suspicion.

Taif mountain honey

Honey from the Taif mountains, including sidr and wildflower varieties, is among the most sought-after in Saudi Arabia, thick and intensely flavoured. It is genuinely expensive, reflecting the rugged terrain and small harvests.

Buy from a trusted farm or cooperative and be wary of very cheap 'mountain honey', as adulterated blends are common at the premium end.

Taif grapes

Taif's cool highland climate produces exceptionally sweet grapes, grown in valley vineyards and sold fresh in summer and early autumn. Along with figs, they are a symbol of the area's fertile orchards and a favourite roadside buy.

Buy grapes and figs in season from roadside stalls in the highlands, where they are freshest and cheapest, and wash them before eating.

Taif pomegranate

The Taif pomegranate is prized across the Kingdom for its deep colour and sweet, juicy seeds, ripening in the highland orchards in late summer and autumn. It is one of the region's most famous fruits and a common gift.

Look for heavy fruit with taut, glossy skin; local sellers will often let you taste before you buy a box.

Rose-scented sweets

Taif's rosewater perfumes its sweets, from rose-scented maamoul (semolina shortbread stuffed with dates or nuts) to rose jam and Turkish-delight-style treats. The delicate floral note is what sets the local versions apart.

Pick up rose-flavoured maamoul or rose jam from a downtown sweet shop to take home; they travel well and capture the city's signature scent.

Taxi overcharging on the mountain road

วิธีการทำงาน: On the Jeddah and Mecca to Taif route and around town, some drivers quote inflated flat fares to tourists, refuse to use a meter, or claim it is broken, leaving you paying well above the fair price.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Use Uber or Careem, which fix the price in the app, or the cheap SAPTCO bus for the mountain road. If you must take a street taxi, agree the fare clearly before getting in and have a rough idea of the going rate.

Book everything — at the honest price

Trzly compares across the big providers and points you to the cheapest. We don't take your booking or hold your money — we send you straight to the source, name the price, and warn you about scams.

How Trzly ranks

Cheapest for you first — never by commission. When booking direct is cheaper, we say so, even when we earn nothing. Rank order is a function of price and trust only.

Insider tricks for the lowest price

Real tactics that actually save you money — we surface them, not just talk.

  • Always pay in the local currency — decline "pay in your currency" (DCC) to save 3–7%.
  • Open in a private window and clear cookies — some sites raise the price on repeat visits.
  • A transit/layover flight is usually cheaper than a direct one — worth the stop.
  • Book flights on Tuesday/Wednesday; avoid Friday and Sunday.
  • Book hotels direct on their own site — the member rate often beats the middlemen.
  • Ask for the "app-only rate" — often hidden from the public price.
  • Free cancellation? Book now and re-book if the price drops later.
  • Buy attraction tickets on the official site, not a reseller — no service fee.
  • A local eSIM instead of roaming — up to 90% cheaper.
  • Set a price alert and watch for the drop before high season.

การเดินทางไปและรอบๆ

ค่าโดยสารจริง ไม่ใช่ราคานักท่องเที่ยว

การเดินทางไป
SAPTCO intercity bus 2.5 ชม.US$11-19

SAPTCO and similar coaches connect Jeddah, Mecca and Taif over the mountain road in around two to two and a half hours for a low fixed fare. The cheapest and most comfortable option, though departures are limited, so check the schedule ahead.

Ride-hailing car 2 ชม.US$45-90

A booked Uber or Careem car from Jeddah or Mecca gives a fixed, transparent price for the climb to Taif and is often cheaper and clearer than a negotiated taxi. Confirm the driver will do the intercity trip and allow for the winding mountain road.

Private taxi 2 ชม.US$53-133

A private taxi or arranged car up from Jeddah, its airport or Mecca is convenient with luggage or a group. Agree the full fare in advance, as tourist quotes can be high, and prefer an app-based option where possible.

การเดินทางรอบๆ
Uber and CareemUS$3-8

Within Taif, ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around, with the fare set in the app and the route tracked. Coverage is good in the centre and out to Al Hada and the farms, which avoids fare disputes.

Street taxiUS$4-11

Street taxis are available but often lack a working meter, so agree the price before setting off. For spread-out sights and the mountain roads, a booked car or ride-hailing app is usually easier and clearer on price.

Rental car

Renting a car makes sense in Taif, as the rose farms, Al Hada and Al Shafa are spread out and scenic. Roads are good but mountain sections are steep with hairpin bends, so drive carefully, especially in mist or after rain.

ช่วงเวลาที่ดีที่สุดในการมาเยือน

มีนาคม–พฤษภาคมและตุลาคม–พฤศจิกายน

Spring (March to May) is the highlight, when the damask roses bloom and the rose festival fills the air with scent, and autumn (October to November) brings warm days and cool evenings. Thanks to its altitude, Taif stays pleasantly cool in summer and becomes a busy domestic holiday spot from June to August, though hotels fill and roads get crowded. Winter is chilly, especially at night, and the high roads can be cold and misty.

ความปลอดภัย

ระวังThe roads up to Taif and around Al Hada and Al Shafa are scenic but steep, with tight hairpin bends, sudden mist and occasional rain that cut visibility. Whether driving or riding, take the mountain sections slowly and avoid the escarpment roads after dark in bad weather.
ระวังTaif is a fairly traditional city in a conservative region near Mecca, so modest dress covering shoulders and knees is respectful for everyone, and lightweight modest clothing suits women best. Public behaviour is low-key, and during Ramadan it is polite to avoid eating or drinking openly in daylight.
ระวังSummer is Taif's peak season as Saudis escape the coastal heat, so expect busy roads, full hotels and queues at Al Hada and the parks from June to August. The high-altitude sun is strong by day while evenings turn cool, so carry sun protection, water and a light layer.

จุดลับน่าไป

Time a spring visit for the rose harvest and tour a working farm around Al Hada at dawn, when the petals are picked and the first distillation of the day fills the air with scent.
Ride or drive the Al Hada escarpment road at sunset for the view over the switchbacks and coastal haze, then warm up with cardamom coffee at a mountaintop cafe.
Seek out a plate of proper Taif saleeg at a traditional restaurant, then pick up local mountain honey and fresh figs or pomegranates from a roadside stall in Al Shafa.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

How many days do I need in Taif?

One full day covers Shubra Palace, the downtown souk and a trip up to Al Hada. Two days let you add the Al Shafa highlands, a rose farm in season and a slower pace, and Taif also works as an easy day trip from Jeddah or Mecca.

Can non-Muslims visit Taif?

Yes. Unlike neighbouring Mecca, Taif lies outside the restricted holy area and is open to visitors of all faiths, which makes it a popular mountain escape and cultural stop for international travellers.

When do the famous Taif roses bloom?

The damask roses bloom mainly from late March into April, when farms harvest petals and distil rose water and oil, and the annual rose festival takes place. Outside spring you can still buy rose products, but the farms are much quieter.

What is the best way to get to Taif from Jeddah or Mecca?

The mountain road takes about two to two and a half hours. A SAPTCO coach is the cheapest option, a booked Uber or Careem car gives a fixed price, and a private taxi suits groups with luggage. Agree fares in advance to avoid overcharging.

What should I eat and buy in Taif?

Try saleeg, the creamy local rice dish, along with fresh grapes, pomegranates and figs in season. The classic souvenirs are genuine Taif rose water and oil and prized mountain honey, best bought from established farms and shops.
