Whitewashed cliffs and famous sunsets over a volcanic caldera

Огляд

Santorini is the most famous of Greece's Cyclades islands, a crescent of dark volcanic cliffs wrapped around a flooded caldera left by an ancient eruption. Its whitewashed towns of Fira and Oia cling to the cliff edge, their blue-domed churches and cave houses looking out over the sea in one of the Mediterranean's most photographed views. Days here are spent wandering the clifftop lanes, swimming at unusual black and red volcanic beaches, tasting the island's distinctive wines and taking a boat out onto the caldera. The island is small and easy to cross by public bus, rental quad or car, though the main towns get very crowded in summer, especially at sunset in Oia. Santorini is beautiful but pricey, with cliffside restaurants and tours charging a premium for the view. A little planning around the crowds and costs makes for a far more relaxed and rewarding visit.

Airport taxi to Fira
за проїзд
30–45 EUR · 34–52 USD

The island has only a small number of taxis, so agree the fare before setting off and expect higher prices at busy times. Pre-booked hotel transfers or the bus are often better value.

KTEL public bus ride
за проїзд
2–3 EUR · 2–4 USD

The public buses run between the airport, port, Fira, Oia and the beaches for a low flat fare, all via the Fira hub. Cheap and reliable, though they get crowded in peak season.

Fira cable car
з особи
9–11 EUR · 10–13 USD

The cable car links Fira with the old port far more comfortably than the steep donkey path or steps. Expect a queue when cruise ships are in, and buy your ticket at the top station.

Mid-range taverna meal
з особи
16–35 EUR · 18–40 USD

Restaurants with a direct caldera or sunset view charge a heavy premium. Eat in inland villages like Megalochori or Pyrgos, or a street back from the cliff, for better food and prices.

Coffee or frappe at a cafe
per cup
3–6 EUR · 3–7 USD

A coffee on a cliffside terrace costs far more than the same drink inland. The view is worth it occasionally, but everyday cafes away from the caldera are much cheaper.

ATV or small car rental
за день
22–52 EUR · 25–60 USD

Renting a quad or small car gives freedom to reach quieter beaches and villages. Check the insurance, wear a helmet, and be aware ATVs are involved in many minor accidents on the island.

Gyros or souvlaki wrap
per item
3–6 EUR · 3–7 USD

For a cheap, filling meal, a gyros from a souvlaki shop in Fira or a village costs a fraction of a sit-down dinner and is a good budget option between bigger meals.

Donkey-ride overcharge and welfare
Середня

Як це працює: Handlers offer donkey rides up the steep Fira cliff path, then charge far more than quoted, and the animals are often overloaded in the heat, an animal-welfare concern.

Як це уникнути: Use the cable car instead, which is quick and comfortable. If you do consider a ride, agree the exact price first, and many visitors choose to avoid the donkeys altogether on welfare grounds.

Sunset-view restaurant markup
Середня

Як це працює: Restaurants and bars with a prime Oia or Fira sunset view charge steep prices, sometimes with a minimum spend, a cover charge or a compulsory set menu at sunset.

Як це уникнути: Check prices and any minimum spend before sitting down, or enjoy the sunset for free from a public viewpoint and eat afterwards at a better-value spot away from the cliff edge.

ATM and card conversion fees
Середня

Як це працює: Some independent ATMs and card machines push 'dynamic currency conversion', offering to charge you in your home currency at a poor exchange rate plus extra fees.

Як це уникнути: Always choose to be charged in euros, not your home currency, on any ATM or card machine. Use bank ATMs where possible and decline the offered conversion.

Taxi shortage overcharge
Середня

Як це працює: With very few taxis on the island, drivers at busy times or late at night may quote inflated flat fares or refuse the meter, especially for airport and port runs.

Як це уникнути: Agree the fare before getting in, ask your hotel for the going rate, and pre-book transfers for arrivals and departures. The public bus via Fira is a cheap fallback in daytime.

Справжні тарифи, не туристичні ціни.

Як дістатися
Ferry from Athens (Piraeus) 5 год35–113 EUR · 40–130 USD

Domestic flight 50 хв39–130 EUR · 45–150 USD

Short flights connect Athens and other cities with Santorini's small airport in under an hour. The fastest way to arrive, though fares rise sharply in peak season and the airport is compact.

Port or airport transfer bus 30 хв2–3 EUR · 2–4 USD

Public buses meet arrivals and run to Fira, from where you connect onward. A cheap alternative to taxis, though services can be busy right after a big ferry or flight arrives.

Як пересуватися
KTEL public buses2–3 EUR · 2–4 USD

The island's public buses connect Fira with Oia, the beaches, the port and the airport for a low fare, all routed through the Fira hub. Cheap and useful, but crowded in high season.

Island taxis13–35 EUR · 15–40 USD

There are only a limited number of taxis on Santorini, so they can be scarce and pricey at busy times. Agree the fare in advance and pre-book for early departures.

A rented quad or small car is the most flexible way to explore the quieter villages and beaches. Check insurance, wear a helmet, and drive carefully on narrow, busy roads.

Найкраща пора для відвідування

травень–червень і вересень–жовтень

Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) bring warm weather, swimmable seas and slightly thinner crowds, making them the ideal time to visit. July and August are hot, extremely crowded and most expensive, while winter is quiet and mild but many businesses close and ferries are less frequent.

Безпека

ПопередженняThe clifftop towns are full of steep, uneven steps, narrow lanes and unfenced drops, which can be slippery and are often shared with mules. Wear sturdy, grippy shoes, take care near edges and mind your footing after dark.
ОбережністьSummer sun is intense with little shade at the beaches and archaeological sites. Carry water, use sunscreen and a hat, and plan the most exposed activities for the cooler morning or late afternoon.
ОбережністьStrong Aegean winds can delay or cancel ferries at short notice, especially in shoulder season. Build a buffer day before onward flights, keep an eye on the forecast, and confirm departures the day before.

Приховані скарбища

Walk the clifftop path from Fira to Oia in the late afternoon for caldera views and far fewer crowds than the sunset scrum.
Escape to the inland villages of Pyrgos or Megalochori for quiet lanes, local tavernas and sunset views without the premium.
Head down to Amoudi Bay below Oia for fresh seafood by the water and a swim off the rocks away from the main beaches.
