Cancun sits on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, famous for its long strip of white-sand beaches and turquoise water known as the Hotel Zone. This narrow barrier island of resorts, malls and nightlife is what most visitors picture, while the mainland downtown offers cheaper food, local markets and a more everyday Mexican feel. Beyond the beach, Cancun is a springboard for some of the region's greatest sights, from the Maya ruins of Chichen Itza and Tulum to freshwater cenotes for swimming and the calm island of Isla Mujeres a short ferry away. Getting around the Hotel Zone is easy and cheap on the frequent local buses, and shared vans reach towns down the coast. Many resorts are all-inclusive, but stepping out for street tacos and local restaurants rewards the curious and the budget-minded. The main things to manage are strong sun, the odd rip current, and persistent timeshare and taxi hustles. With a little planning it is an easy, sunny and rewarding base.

Do I need to hire a car?

Should I pay in dollars or pesos?

Is the tap water safe to drink?
