A UNESCO-listed maze of tall Venetian houses, narrow kantounia alleys, arcaded streets and small squares, layered with French and British influence. Free to wander and best explored slowly on foot, ideally in the softer light of the morning or early evening. Duck into the churches and stop for a coffee under the Liston arcades.
The Venetian fortress on the rocky eastern promontory of the Old Town, separated from the city by a sea moat. Climb up past the barracks and the British-era church of St George to the lighthouse for a sweeping view over the town, the sea and the mainland mountains. There is a separate New Fortress nearby that is also worth a look.
A neoclassical palace at Gastouri, built in 1890 as a summer retreat for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) and themed around the hero Achilles. The main draws are the Achilles statues, the frescoed staircase and the terraced gardens with fine views over the coast. It is a short drive or bus ride south of Corfu Town.
A cluster of green coves and clear turquoise water on the north-west coast, backed by cliffs and topped by a small hilltop monastery. Swim from the beaches, take a small boat to the sea caves, or drive up to the Bella Vista viewpoint for the classic panorama. Come early in summer, as the coves and car parks fill quickly.

Corfu's signature Sunday dish: beef or, traditionally, rooster slow-cooked in a rich tomato sauce warmed with cinnamon, cloves, sweet spices and red wine, then served over thick, tubular pasta and dusted with grated kefalotyri cheese. The spicing reflects the island's long Venetian ties.
Look for it as the house special at a traditional taverna, ideally on a Sunday when many families still cook it; the rooster (kokoras) version is the most old-fashioned.

Its name comes from the Italian soffritto, a direct nod to the Venetian centuries.
It is milder than the island's tomato and chilli dishes, so it is a good choice if you want something savoury but not spicy; mop up the garlicky sauce with bread.

Ask how hot the kitchen makes it, order it with plenty of bread to soak up the sauce, and be ready for bones if it is made with scorpionfish.

Try a small glass of the liqueur or a spoon sweet before buying a bottle to take home; it makes a distinctive, genuinely local souvenir when bought from an established producer.
A lightly fizzy, non-alcoholic ginger drink whose name and recipe are a leftover of 19th-century British rule over Corfu and the Ionian Islands, made with ginger, lemon and sugar. It is a refreshing, distinctly Corfiot soft drink you will rarely find elsewhere in Greece.
Look for it chilled at traditional cafes and grocers in Corfu Town; it is a fun, historically rooted alternative to a soft drink on a hot afternoon.
A cured, air-dried and lightly smoked pork loin flavoured with local herbs and sometimes a splash of wine, another Corfiot speciality with clear Venetian roots. Sliced thin, it is served as a starter or meze alongside cheese, olives and bread.
Order it as part of a mixed meze plate with local cheeses to taste the island's cured-meat tradition; it pairs well with a glass of local wine.

Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport (CFU) sits just south of Corfu Town and has domestic links to Athens and, in summer, many direct flights from across Europe. The quickest way to reach the island, and the airport is unusually close to the centre.
Frequent car and passenger ferries cross from the mainland port of Igoumenitsa to Corfu in around 1 to 1.5 hours, with many daily sailings in summer. The usual route if you are driving or coming overland, and cheap for foot passengers.
A taxi covers the short 3 km from the airport to the Old Town in about ten minutes. Convenient with luggage; agree the fare or confirm the meter first, as there is no ride-hailing app on the island.
The blue city buses cover Corfu Town and the nearby suburbs and beaches (Kanoni, Achilleion area, Dassia) cheaply. Buy tickets at kiosks or a little more on board, and keep small change handy.
Green intercity buses link the main town station with villages and beaches around the island, such as Paleokastritsa, Sidari and Kassiopi. Affordable but less frequent, so plan around the timetable, especially for the return.
Metered taxis are handy for trips the buses do not cover well and for late evenings. Insist on the meter or agree a price first; with no Uber on Corfu, official taxis and pre-booked transfers are the alternatives to the bus.
Renting your own wheels is the best way to reach the quieter coves and hill villages at your own pace. Roads are scenic but narrow and winding; photograph the vehicle before driving and ride carefully if you are new to scooters.
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the sweet spots, with warm sea, green hills and thinner crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot, busy and pricey, with packed beaches and higher room rates, while winter is mild but wet, and Corfu is famously the greenest Greek island precisely because it rains more; many resorts and some ferries wind down out of season.
Three to four days let you explore the Old Town and its two fortresses, visit the Achilleion, and reach a couple of west-coast beaches like Paleokastritsa at a relaxed pace. A week suits a beach-based trip with day drives around the greener north and quieter south.
No. Uber, Bolt and similar apps do not operate on Corfu, so getting around means the blue and green buses, official metered taxis, pre-booked transfers, or renting a car or scooter. Agree taxi fares or insist on the meter, as there is no app price to fall back on.
For Corfu Town and nearby beaches, the cheap blue buses work well. Green intercity buses reach the main villages but run less often, so for the quieter coves and hill roads a rental car, scooter or ATV gives you the most freedom, weather and confidence permitting.
Yes, Corfu is generally very safe, with serious crime against visitors rare. The everyday annoyances are overcharging at some tourist tavernas, taxi drivers avoiding the meter, and scooter-rental damage claims, all of which a little care and clear prices manage easily.
May, June, September and early October offer warm weather, a swimmable sea and fewer crowds than the July to August peak. Winter is green and mild but wet, with many resorts closed, so it suits Corfu Town and walking more than a beach holiday.
